Hazardous Materials Specialist - part-time/28 hrs per week

The Hazardous Materials Specialist supports the day-to-day hazardous materials operations for BYU, with a primary focus on the safe and compliant management of regulated waste. This position works with a variety of hazardous materials, including flammable solvents, corrosive materials, toxic and explosive compounds, biological waste, and radioactive sources. The role also supervises student employees and helps BYU to properly manage, and disposal of hazardous waste is an environmentally safe manner.

What you’ll do in this position:

  • Collect, characterize, consolidate, and prepare hazardous waste for proper disposal
  • Identify unknown materials and provide guidance on safe chemical handling and storage
  • Conduct chemical inventory and storage audits, cleanouts, and surplus operations
  • Supervise and train student employees and manage daily work assignments
  • Evaluate and coordinate supplies and equipment needed for hazardous materials operations
  • Respond to hazardous material spills as part of the campus Chemical Spill Response Team
  • Maintain spill response equipment, supplies, and readiness

What qualifies you for this role:

Required:

  • Two years of relevant education or full or part-time experience
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials
  • Strong organizational and task-prioritization skills
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Ability to lift a 50-pound container and maneuver heavy or bulky materials using appropriate mechanical equipment

Preferred:

  • Degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Life Sciences, Engineering, or a related field
  • Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) training
  • DOT Hazardous Materials Transportation training
  • HAZWOPER training
  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or related professional certification
  • Commercial Driver’s License with HazMat endorsement

  • Knowledge of chemical handling, storage, and waste management practices
  • Ability to follow detailed regulatory and safety procedures
  • Dependability and ability to respond appropriately to hazardous material incidents

Pay Grade: 49

Typical Starting Pay: $22.50-$29.25

The actual compensation offered will take into consideration internal equity and may vary based on the candidate’s job-related experience, knowledge, skills, and other relevant factors. Candidates with very significant work-related experience may receive an offer higher than the posted typical range.
