The “Ecosystem-Based Adaptation and Mitigation in Botswana’s Communal Rangelands” Project funded by Green Climate Fund (GCF) aims to utilize collective management of livestock and ecosystems to restore Botswana’s communal rangelands, increasing the climate resilience of vulnerable populations and reducing GHG emissions. Over 8 years, the project will undertake activities in 104 villages in the Project Areas: Ngamiland, Kgalagadi and Bobirwa geographic areas of Botswana to improve management of 4.6 million hectares of rangelands. The day-to-day activities of the Project are implemented in each of the three Project Areas.  Administratively, the project areas cover the following districts: Okavango and North-West and Okavango Districts (Ngamiland Area); Hukuntsi, Tsabong and Mabutsane Districts (Kgalagadi Area); and Bobirwa District (Bobirwa Area).

POSITION SUMMARY - These positions are based in Maun, Hukuntsi, Bobonong

The Rangeland Facilitation Officer will support the implementation of district-level rangeland restoration and climate resilience activities under the project. The officer will serve as the district Ikageng Coordinator and facilitate effective deployment, training, workforce management, and performance monitoring of Ikageng Restoration Workers and EcoRangers.

The position is designed as a professional development opportunity that provides practical exposure to rangeland stewardship, climate-responsive livestock production systems, innovative veterinary approaches, ecosystem restoration, and climate-responsive enterprise development.

The officer will play a key coordination role in ensuring that all project-related training, capacity-building, workforce administration, and reporting requirements are effectively delivered across project intervention areas.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Project Coordination

  • Coordinate implementation of district-level rangeland restoration activities.
  • Support planning and execution of project activities in collaboration with Ministry officials and project partners.
  • Act as the primary liaison between the project, district stakeholders, communities, and Ikageng participants.
  • Facilitate community mobilisation and participation in project activities.

Ikageng and EcoRanger Coordination

  • Coordinate engagement and deployment of Ikageng Restoration Workers and EcoRangers within the district in close coordination with the project Jobs 4 Nature Senior Manager
  • Maintain records of participant attendance, deployment schedules, and performance.
  • Support supervision and day-to-day administration of restoration workforce activities.
  • Ensure adherence to project guidelines, workplace standards, and reporting requirements.

Training & Capacity Building

  • Coordinate all HR, induction, and technical training programmes delivered by BUAN-CICE and project partners.
  • Ensure training plans are implemented according to project schedules.
  • Monitor and evaluation of attendance and completion of training programmes.
  • Maintain training databases and records for all participants.
  • Assist with evaluation of training effectiveness and participant performance.
  • Provide technical support to livestock farming community.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build and maintain productive working relationships with government departments, traditional leaders, community organizations, and project partners.
  • Facilitate meetings, workshops, and stakeholder consultations.
  • Support communication and awareness activities promoting sustainable rangeland management.

Monitoring & Reporting

  • Collect and compile district-level project data.
  • Maintain accurate records on workforce participation, training, restoration activities, and outputs.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and ad hoc reports.
  • Support monitoring and evaluation activities and field assessments.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Normal office environment hosted in the Ministry of Lands & Agriculture.
  • Working outside normal working hours.
  • Ability to travel frequently in the remote areas within Project Area.
  • Ability to work with local partners.
  • High adaptability to difficult conditions.
  • Be a team player. 

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in Animal Science/production, Agricultural management, or a closely related field from a recognized institution.
  • Must have 2 to 4 years of related experience coordinating community programmes, training activities, agricultural projects, job creation programmes, or environmental initiatives. Experience working with communal livestock farmers.
  • Demonstrated leadership/ volunteer experience.
  • Must be dynamic, with strong inspiration and motivation to live and work within communities, able to communicate well with stakeholders so as to ensure project understanding, buy-in, and compliance.
  • Demonstrated strong community and/ coordinating skills.
  • Must have good writing and speaking skills in Setswana and English; however, specific area local language will be an added advantage.
  • Demonstrated facilitation skills.
  • Must have adequate working experience in multi-disciplinary teams and proven supervisory experience.
  • Experience working with international development partners or agencies will also be a significant advantage.
  • Proven ability to multitask and meet priorities. Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.

Preferred

  • Work experience and existing networks in agriculture, NGOs, community development, local authorities, or government at cluster level.
  • Proven ability to manage teams.
  • Supporting other staff in the implementation of project-related activities for the exigency of the service.
