Rowland Bicentennial Fellow in Health Studies

The University of Richmond invites applications for the full-time Rowland Bicentennial Fellow in Health Studies at the rank of tenure-track Assistant Professor to begin in August 2027.

The Department of Health Studies (HS) (https://hs.richmond.edu/) equips students with theoretical and empirical frameworks for understanding the social, cultural, environmental, biological, ethical, economic, legal, and policy contexts that shape individual and population health. HS alumni work in medicine and other clinical professions, public health, healthcare policy and management, and many other health-related fields. Under Richmond’s teacher-scholar model, professors typically teach undergraduate courses, author peer-reviewed scholarship, mentor student researchers, and participate in departmental and university governance. We seek a faculty colleague who shares our commitment to student-centered undergraduate education with service expectations tailored to career trajectory. The department welcomes applicants with sufficient training and expertise to teachHealth Systems & Policy plus one of the department’s two other introductory core courses in global (public) healthor epidemiology & health research methods. Candidates with demonstrated strength inapplied data analysis relevant to population health are particularly encouraged to apply. We welcome a range of methodological expertise, including quantitative, computational, and mixed-methods approaches to analyzing health data. A doctoral degree in public health or a doctoral degree in a closely related field with additional public health training (e.g., an MPH) must be completed prior to the start date.

The teaching statement should (a) outline their training and expertise to teachHealth Systems & Policy, (b) name the additional core HS courses they could teach and any elective HS courses the applicant is interested in teaching and/or developing, (c) detail their training and proficiency inapplied data analysis, (d) describe any teaching experience or training, (e) articulate the applicant’s teaching philosophy and strategies for teaching effectiveness, and (f) express the applicant's involvement in and commitment to inclusive pedagogy. The research statement should describe the applicant’s research area(s) and plans, including plans for meaningfully involving undergraduate students in research, and the nature of theapplied data analysis in their research. Applicants will also be asked to provide the names and contact information for three references who may be asked, later, to submit letters of recommendation.

The starting salary for the position is budgeted at $85,000. Compensation is determined by the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, and skills.
