The Chap Success Center Tutor supports Midland College students by providing academic assistance in the Math Lab. Tutors help students strengthen their understanding of course content, develop effective study habits, and build confidence as independent learners. This position is student-centered and focuses on guiding students through the learning process rather than simply providing answers.Â
Tutors work one-on-one and, when needed, in small-group settings to help students review course material, prepare assignments and exams, improve problem-solving strategies, and apply effective academic skills. Tutors are expected to create a welcoming, supportive, and professional learning environment that encourages student success.Â
- Provide one-on-one and small-group tutoring in subject areaÂ
- Assist students with understanding course concepts, assignments, study strategies, and academic expectationsÂ
- Use open-ended and guiding questions to encourage student thinking, problem-solving, and independent learningÂ
- Help students develop effective study habits, time management strategies, note-taking skills, and exam preparation techniquesÂ
- Reinforce course content without completing assignments or providing answers for studentsÂ
- Complete required tutor training through the Chap Success Center’s certified tutor training program, recognized by the College Reading and Learning Association’s International Tutor Training Program Certification.Â
- Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions, student appointments, and required documentationÂ
- Uphold student confidentiality at all timesÂ
- Create a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment for all studentsÂ
- Refer students to appropriate campus resources when additional support is neededÂ
- Assist with academic workshops, study sessions, events, and programming as neededÂ
- Collaborate with other tutors, faculty, and Chap Success Center staff to support student learningÂ
- Attend required meetings, trainings, and professional development sessionsÂ
- Help maintain a clean, organized, safe, and productive tutoring environmentÂ
- Assist with managing center expectations, including appropriate noise levels and shared-space useÂ
- Report concerns, student issues, or operational needs to the Director of Academic Engagement or designated staff memberÂ
- Follow all Midland College policies, procedures, and expectationsÂ
- Perform other duties related to Academic Engagement, tutoring services, and the Learning Resource Center as assigned
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated proficiency in mathematics, which may include successful completion of relevant coursework with a strong grade, equivalent field experience, professional experience, or other evidence of subject matter competence.Â
- Ability to work effectively with students individually and in small groupsÂ
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skillsÂ
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skillsÂ
- Ability to explain course concepts clearly and patientlyÂ
- Ability to speak and write clearly in EnglishÂ
- Ability to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and appropriate boundaries with studentsÂ
- Basic familiarity with general office equipment and technologyÂ
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior tutoring, teaching, mentoring, or customer service experienceÂ
- Ability to read and speak SpanishÂ
- Familiarity with Canvas, Microsoft Office 365, and other common student technology tools
Physical Demands
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time Â
- Frequent use of a computer, keyboard, and workstation Â
- Frequent communication with students, employees, and visitors; must be able to exchange accurate information Â
- May occasionally move boxes, materials, or equipment weighing up to 25 pounds Â
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, which may include evenings, weekends, extended hours, and Midland College or community events as neededÂ
