The Provider EHR Support Specialist is a key technical role supporting North Carolina's Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP) by assisting rural and underserved healthcare organizations in connecting to and fully utilizing the state's health information exchange. This role delivers targeted expertise in Electronic Health Records (EHRs), healthcare interoperability, clinical workflow integration, and data quality improvement to ensure providers submit accurate, standards-aligned clinical data. Additionally, the Specialist provides direct support to help rural providers effectively leverage exchange tools, clinical portals, and notification services to advance statewide care coordination and population health goals.
Key Responsibilities
-
EHR Integration & Technical Onboarding: Lead rural provider onboarding to the state health information exchange, guiding healthcare organizations and EHR vendors through connection requirements, HL7 v2 exchange, C-CDA/CCD exchange, and specialized notification services. Conduct technical assessments of EHR capabilities, interface configurations, and data extraction workflows to identify readiness gaps and implementation needs, while coordinating with internal technical teams to resolve integration tickets and data ingestion issues.
-
Healthcare Interoperability Standards & Compliance: Provide expert guidance on interoperability standards including HL7 v2, C-CDA, CCD, USCDI, and state interoperability expectations. Evaluate provider data submissions for compliance, troubleshooting technical issues related to message structure, vocabulary standards, and transport methods.
-
Data Quality & Validation: Review incoming clinical data from providers for completeness, correctness, timeliness, and conformance to exchange requirements. Lead or assist with data quality uplift initiatives—including validation of HL7, ADT, CCD, and other structured clinical data—and work directly with providers and EHR vendors to resolve root-cause data issues through mapping guidance and workflow adjustments.
-
Training & Provider Support: Deliver tailored technical assistance, educational materials, and training sessions to help rural providers understand and utilize exchange tools and clinical portals. Collaborate with provider relations teams on communication schedules and project coordination, helping providers understand data flows, reporting requirements, and best practices.
-
Cross-Team & Program Collaboration: Partner with cross-functional teams on broader interoperability and data quality initiatives to support the modernization of digital health infrastructure across rural North Carolina, contributing to continuous improvement in provider onboarding processes.
