Work Schedule

Monday through Friday. 7.5-hour workday with .5-hour unpaid lunch. Paid for actual time worked; there are no paid vacation or sick days. During NYPA and Canals holidays, the business is closed, and no work is permitted. NYPA requires a hybrid schedule of a minimum of 3 days on-site, up to including fully on-site depending on department requirements.

CWPO Engagement Requirements

Candidates are REQUIRED to be local to the Tri-State area and in W2 tax status as an hourly paid employee of Service Provider. Fully remote positions are prohibited. Hybrid schedules are permissible with a minimum of 2 days on-site depending on assignment and can be fully on-site depending on business needs. Remote work privileges can be revoked at any time. NYPA does not provide laptops. Instead, NYPA provides desktops and dedicated workstations which candidates will remote into from their personal equipment on virtual days. If candidate does not have proper equipment, internet connection, or he/she is deemed to not work effectively from home, the hybrid privilege will be revoked. Vendors must disclose foreign national status and all Visas at the time of candidate submission. Additionally, a Benefits Waiver and Ethics Disclosure will be required of the candidate during onboarding.

Project Overview

The Protection and Control Engineer will perform system disturbance analysis, develop design solutions for NYPA's protection and control and associated communication systems, and recommend protective relaying system modifications and/or additions. This role will assure adherence to applicable North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards to maintain and operate NYPA assets. This role will support the current qualified resource gap in protection and control engineering.

Job Functions & Responsibilities

  • Perform system disturbance analysis and recommend protective relaying system modification and/or additions, if required.
  • Perform engineering design for protection and control and associated communication systems
  • Perform short circuit studies and other calculations as required to establish relay settings
  • Perform NERC / NPCC compliance related tasks
  • Provide site support during project commissioning or disturbance investigation.

Skills

  • Proficient in the engineering and design of Protection and Control systems specific to the electric utility industry.
  • Working knowledge of protective relaying systems and their various components.
  • Familiarity with developing relay settings and understanding of calculations
  • Familiarity with programming microprocessor-based protective relays
  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Office applications.

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent technical degree, from an accredited college or university.
