Job Summary
General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems.We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Project Engineer to join our Wildfire Massed Modular Aircraft (MMA) Project Engineering Team located in Poway, CA. Wildfire is a new Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) designed to replace the MQ-9A Reaper using a ‘best of breeds’ approach from various GA-ASI product lines.
With minimal direction, this position exercises broad independent judgment and technical authority in defining approaches to highly complex, ambiguous, or unprecedented engineering problems. Assignments are typically established through strategic objectives, program needs, customer requirements, and high-level technical goals. The position sets technical direction, leads the resolution of system-level and multidisciplinary engineering issues, and serves as a recognized technical authority and senior consulting resource. Evaluates technical, cost, schedule, and risk tradeoffs; influences decisions across organizations; and provides leadership for major project engineering efforts, multiple technical teams, or strategic engineering initiatives.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide senior technical leadership for complex, high-visibility project engineering activities across multiple subsystems or program areas.
- Define technical approaches and develop solutions to highly complex engineering problems.
- Establish technical direction, priorities, and execution plans for major engineering efforts.
- Lead or influence multiple interdisciplinary teams through design, integration, verification, validation, test, delivery, and sustainment.
- Serve as a senior technical authority and principal interface with customers, program leadership, and senior engineering management.
- Evaluate system-level impacts, technical risks, cost, schedule, and performance tradeoffs, and recommend courses of action.
- Shape proposal strategies, technical baselines, resource estimates, staffing plans, and long-range engineering roadmaps.
- Review and approve significant technical products, analyses, designs, test approaches, and corrective-action plans.
- Develop the technical capabilities of the organization through mentoring, standards, process improvements, and knowledge transfer.
- Represent the organization in major technical reviews, customer discussions, and executive-level briefings.

Job Qualifications
- Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; twelve or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, ten or more years of experience with a masters degree, or seven or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
- Demonstrates a detailed and extensive technical expertise and application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice with the ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones with some experience in project leadership.
- Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment.
- Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to effectively interface with other departments, customers, government representatives, and/or professional.
- Capability of representing the organization as a prime technical contact; and, the ability to provide leadership and guidance to less experienced professionals.
- Must be customer focused and able to work on a self- initiated basis or in a team environment.
- Able to work extended hours and travel as required.
- A Professional Engineering License, original work(s) published in professional engineering journals, invited to present one or more original works to an engineering symposium, and invited and/or participated on an engineering review panel are desirable.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance is required.
- Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with unmanned aircraft systems, aircraft systems engineering, autonomy, mission systems, payload integration, flight-test operations, or related aerospace programs.
- Previous DoD experience highly desirable.
- A Professional Engineering License, original work(s) published in professional engineering journals and invited to present one or more original works to an engineering symposium are desirable.
