Job Summary

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems.

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Project Engineer to join our Wildfire Massed Modular Aircraft (MMA) Project Engineering Team located in Poway, CA. Wildfire is a new Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) designed to replace the MQ-9A Reaper using a ‘best of breeds’ approach from various GA-ASI product lines.

With general direction, this position applies established engineering principles and practices to develop designs, procedures, analyses, and solutions for complex technical problems within an assigned project or subsystem. Assignments are generally defined by objectives, requirements, schedules, and expected outcomes. The position exercises judgment in planning and executing technical work, coordinates with other engineering disciplines, and supports the successful resolution of issues. May lead assigned technical tasks or small interdisciplinary efforts and provide guidance to less experienced engineers.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop solutions to complex engineering problems within an assigned subsystem or project area.
  • Provide project engineering support throughout design, integration, test, and delivery.
  • Support laboratory, ground, flight-test, and customer-training events.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues in laboratory and flight-test environments and coordinate resolution with cross-functional teams.
  • Prepare technical analyses, reports, and presentations for engineering management and customers.
  • Lead assigned technical tasks or small interdisciplinary efforts, coordinating schedules, deliverables, and action items.
  • Apply systems engineering processes, including requirements analysis, interface management, verification, and validation.
  • Identify technical risks, develop mitigation plans, and communicate status to project leadership.
  • Provide guidance and informal mentoring to less experienced engineers.

Job Qualifications

  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; six or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, four or more years of experience with a masters degree, or two or more years with a PhD.  May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.  
  • Must have a thorough understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; and, expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in related technical specialties.
  • Must possess the ability to develop and communicate new concepts; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and, determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
  • Must have strong communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Able to perform complex tasks in one or more engineering areas.
  • Capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact and, lead a team of moderately experienced professional employees on single component projects.
  • Able to work extended hours as required.
  • A Professional Engineering License and original work published in professional engineering journals are desirable.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance is required.
  • Desired Qualifications:
    • Experience with unmanned aircraft systems, aircraft systems engineering, autonomy, mission systems, payload integration, flight-test operations, or related aerospace programs.
    • Previous DoD experience highly desirable.
