The Product Material Compliance Engineer will perform component-level material and substance analysis to support REACH compliance. The role involves reviewing drawings and BOMs, determining the chemical composition of individual components, performing weight-by-weight calculations, entering the information into CDX, and obtaining supporting documentation from suppliers.
Key Responsibilities
- Extract BOMs from engineering drawings, the customer’s MPS database, ENOVIA, and MRP/ERP systems.
- Review existing documentation and correspondence associated with assigned parts, subassemblies, and top assemblies.
- Interpret drawings, material specifications, process notes, surface treatments, and other technical requirements.
- Determine the material and chemical composition of individual components.
- Perform weight-by-weight calculations for substances contained in each component.
- Create and maintain component, material, and substance information in CDX.
- Contact suppliers of Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) and Source-Controlled Drawing (SCD) components to obtain SDS/MSDS information, material-composition data, and REACH declarations.
- Conduct supplier correspondence using customer-provided email accounts and coordinate with the applicable commodity managers or buyers.
- Identify missing or incomplete information and follow up with suppliers or customer stakeholders for clarification.
- Draft REACH declaration letters when requested by the customer’s REACH Compliance Manager.
- Maintain traceability between drawings, BOMs, specifications, supplier documentation, calculations, and CDX records.
- Implement changes to previously reviewed items through the customer’s designated problem-reporting and change-control systems.
- Execute assigned work packages and accommodate changes in customer priorities.
- Provide weekly updates on completed work, work in progress, supplier responses, open issues, and planned activities.
- Protect customer-provided information and comply with applicable data-security requirements.
Required Skills
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, BOMs, material callouts, specifications, and process notes.
- Working knowledge of CATIA.
- Understanding of engineering materials, material composition, coatings, platings, and surface treatments.
- Knowledge of REACH requirements and substance-compliance analysis.
- Experience with CDX or a comparable material-compliance system; direct CDX experience is preferred.
- Ability to perform material and substance weight-by-weight calculations.
- Ability to review SDS/MSDS documents, supplier declarations, material certificates, and composition data.
- Familiarity with ENOVIA, PLM, MRP/ERP, or engineering document-management systems.
- Strong analytical, documentation, and Microsoft Excel skills.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work with suppliers, engineering teams, commodity managers, buyers, and compliance stakeholders.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage changing priorities.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Relevant experience in product engineering, materials analysis, product compliance, or supplier material-data management.
- Experience with REACH analysis, CDX, material declarations, or component-level substance analysis is preferred.
