Position Summary
Our client is seeking a Product Engineer to join its growing engineering team in the greater Charlotte area.
This role is focused on improving and refining mechanical products that are already in production or in the field, while also developing the tooling, fixtures, jigs, and manufacturing aids needed to support their production.
The Product Engineer will work through real-world engineering challenges involving existing products—evaluating performance, addressing field or production issues, making design improvements, and developing practical solutions that improve manufacturability, quality, reliability, and ease of assembly.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on mechanical engineer who enjoys working with physical products, understanding how things are built and used, and turning engineering problems into practical design solutions. This position offers a blend of mechanical design, product improvement, troubleshooting, and tooling development with the opportunity to see designs move from CAD into real-world implementation.
Key Responsibilities
- Modify and improve existing mechanical products, components, and assemblies based on field feedback, product performance, manufacturing needs, quality concerns, or changing requirements.
- Develop practical design solutions that improve product performance, reliability, manufacturability, assembly, and overall functionality.
- Design jigs, fixtures, tooling, workholding, assembly aids, and other equipment used to support manufacturing.
- Create and maintain detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, engineering drawings, and related technical documentation.
- Evaluate existing designs and identify opportunities to improve fit, function, tolerances, durability, manufacturability, and ease of assembly.
- Apply design-for-manufacturability and design-for-assembly principles when developing or modifying products.
- Troubleshoot product, component, tooling, and fixture-related issues and develop appropriate design solutions.
- Reverse engineer existing components and assemblies when needed to support redesign, modification, or product improvement.
- Support the fabrication, testing, and validation of design changes, tooling, and fixtures.
- Work with engineering, manufacturing personnel, suppliers, fabricators, and other technical stakeholders to understand requirements and confirm design feasibility.
- Manage engineering changes and maintain accurate drawings, models, bills of material, and product documentation.
- Support product improvements throughout implementation and address technical issues as designs are introduced.
- Take ownership of assigned engineering projects and drive them from problem identification through design, validation, and implementation.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Professional experience in mechanical design, product engineering, manufacturing engineering, or a related engineering environment.
- Strong proficiency with NX, SolidWorks, Creo, Inventor, or a comparable 3D CAD platform.
- Experience creating detailed mechanical designs, assemblies, engineering drawings, and technical documentation.
- Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, materials, tolerances, and design for manufacturability.
- Working knowledge of GD&T and the ability to apply appropriate tolerancing to production designs.
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as machining, welding, fabrication, forming, and mechanical assembly.
- Strong mechanical problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate a problem, develop a solution, and carry it through implementation.
- Comfortable working hands-on with physical products, components, prototypes, tooling, and fixtures.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with engineers, technicians, fabricators, suppliers, and other technical personnel.
- Organized, self-directed, and capable of managing multiple engineering priorities.
- Experience designing jigs, fixtures, tooling, workholding, or assembly aids.
- Experience modifying existing products to improve performance, manufacturability, quality, or ease of assembly.
- Experience supporting products already in production or deployed in the field.
- Experience with fabricated metal products, mechanical assemblies, industrial equipment, or similar products.
- Exposure to welding fixture design or robotic welding applications.
- Experience with prototype development, testing, and design validation.
- Experience with reverse engineering and product redesign.
- Familiarity with engineering change processes, product configuration management, and production-release documentation.
