Every minute matters in stroke treatment. Magnendo is developing robotic technology to make life-saving endovascular procedures faster, safer, and more accessible. By combining advanced robotics, magnetic navigation, and intelligent software, we are tackling one of the most technically demanding challenges in healthcare while aiming to expand access to advanced stroke care for patients around the world. Join us in shaping the future of endovascular intervention.
We're looking for a Principal Software Engineer to lead the architecture, design, and development of our core software infrastructure - OS selection and configuration, real-time orchestration, inter-process communication, and hardware support. As our first hire in this domain, you will be a critical part of the small, dedicated team we are building to bring our breakthrough technology from prototype to FDA-approved product.
You will:
Be our technical expert for all things relating to system software infrastructure
Own the architecture, implementation, and system documentation of the core software infrastructure for our powerful medical grade compute platform and robotics system
Evaluate and select an operating system configuration (e.g. Linux variant, QNX, etc.) for our high performance medical grade system, including multiprocessor or virtualization architecture definition as needed
Evaluate and select 3rd party frameworks and tooling for real-time orchestration, inter-process communication, hardware support, and other key system functionality (e.g. ROS2, DDS, Qt, etc.)
Assist with evaluation and selection of our compute platform
Develop flexible and modular architecture and interfaces that will allow subsystem-by-subsystem migration from prototype to medical grade production software including comprehensive unit and integration tests
Develop interfaces to 3rd party hardware
Build and maintain robust logging, record, and playback systems to support debugging, verification, and root-cause investigation
Implement cybersecurity best practices
Define and document a highly automated CI/CD pipeline ensuring determinism and code quality, including static analysis and unit and integration testing
Help develop secure and scalable infrastructure for data storage and model training
Help define and document a software development process that combines best practices of modern high reliability software development with a regulatory v-model framework
Collaborate with Systems Engineers to define and review requirements, test plans, and acceptance criteria; support risk analysis, design reviews, and root-cause investigations
Provide technical leadership and guidance to other engineers in your domain
You are:
9+ years of experience in systems and infrastructure software engineering with demonstrated ability to deliver the types of software described above
Experienced with production software development in an environment with high reliability requirements, preferably under a regulatory regime
Deeply knowledgeable about Linux/OS fundamentals and how distributions are controlled and maintained
Experienced in evaluating, selecting, and packaging 3rd party frameworks and libraries
Experienced with systems infrastructure for high-performance edge compute platforms, CPU/GPU interfaces, memory access and alignment, caching, latency etc.
Experienced with hardware interfaces
Strong proficiency in C++ and/or Python, with a firm grasp of real-time performance considerations, memory management, and software design patterns
Deep knowledge of git workflows, automations, and CI/CD pipelines and tooling
A good collaborator who understands the importance of clear communication and humility
Able to clearly convey complex tradeoffs to cross-functional teams and external partners
Bonus Points:
Experience in the medical device industry, ideally with interventional or robotic systems, working knowledge of medical device software requirements
Experience developing software under a regulatory framework such as medical device (e.g., IEC 62304, IEC 60601), functional safety (IEC 61508, ISO 13849), or automotive (ISO 26262)
Experience with robotics or autonomous systems
Experience with RTOS/embedded systems
Experience with packaging in source-based Linux distributions (Yocto, Gentoo, etc.)
