Job Summary
General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world’s leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies.Lead the engineering, operation, maintenance, and strategic development of electrical power systems supporting tokamak operations, plasma-heating systems, diagnostics, controls, and facility infrastructure. Ensure safe, reliable, and efficient delivery of electrical power for fusion experiments while managing engineering staff, contractors, budgets, and system upgrades.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage high-voltage and medium-voltage electrical distribution systems supporting fusion operations.
- Ensure reliable operation of pulsed-power, power-conversion, switchgear, transformer, grounding, and protection systems.
- Lead planning and execution of electrical infrastructure upgrades for experimental campaigns and facility modernization.
- Direct troubleshooting and root-cause analysis of power-system failures.
- Oversee preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
- Manage electrical engineering staff, technicians, and contractors.
- Develop project schedules, budgets, and technical specifications.
- Ensure compliance with DOE, OSHA, NFPA, and applicable electrical safety standards.
- Coordinate with operations, controls, diagnostics, and experimental science teams to support facility objectives.
- Participate in design reviews, hazard analyses, and readiness assessments for new systems and upgrades.
- Support long-term strategy for power-system reliability, availability, and capacity growth.

Job Qualifications
- Typically requires a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and eleven or more years of engineering experience. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education.
- Preferred: B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering.
- Significant experience (typically 10+ years) with:
- High-voltage power systems
- Power distribution and protection
- Power electronics and converters
- Industrial control systems
- Utility interconnections
- Large research, energy, nuclear, or industrial facilities
- Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Knowledge of electrical safety programs, lockout/tagout, arc-flash analysis, and NFPA 70E.
- Familiarity with power-system studies such as:
- Load flow
- Short-circuit analysis
- Protective relay coordination
- Grounding analysis
- Power-quality assessment
Skills That Would Be Especially Valuable for DIII-D
Because DIII-D operates a large tokamak with extensive heating, diagnostics, and control systems, candidates with experience in:
- Pulsed-power systems
- Three-phase full-bridge controlled rectifiers
- Control systems such as programmable logic controllers, micro-controllers.
- Fusion or accelerator facilities

- High-energy physics laboratories
