Overview
TalentFish is casting a line for a Power BI Report Writer and Trainer (Microsoft Fabric). This is a contract role in Chicago, IL with a hybrid schedule. The reason this position exists is to serve as the designated Power BI trainer for a finance and accounting team moving from static reports to dynamic Power BI reporting built on a Microsoft Fabric lakehouse. You will build practical, easy-to-use reports from existing data models and, most importantly, teach the team to build, maintain, and use reports on their own. This role is ideal for someone who is happiest when the people they train no longer need them.
What You Bring to the Role. (Ideal Experience)
- 5+ years of experience designing and delivering technical training to business users, including live sessions, workshops, and one-on-one coaching
- Proven success with train-the-trainer programs, preparing power users to create and maintain reports independently
- 5+ years writing reports and dashboards in Power BI Desktop and Power BI Service
- Experience building reports from existing semantic models in Microsoft Fabric or Power BI, including relationships, filters, and common DAX measures
- Experience creating training curriculum, step-by-step guides, quick reference materials, and report documentation
- Experience supporting change management and technology adoption with users of varying technical skill levels
- A patient, approachable teaching style that makes people comfortable asking questions
- Ability to translate business reporting needs into clear requirements for data engineering teams
- Financial or accounting data experience is a plus but not required
- Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300), Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT), or a training or instructional design credential is a plus
What You'll Do. (Skills Used in this Position)
- Learn the existing Fabric environment and data models alongside internal data engineers
- Assess the finance team's current skill levels and build a training plan for power users and end users
- Train a few power users to create, edit, and maintain reports independently
- Train all finance end users to navigate, filter, slice, and export reports
- Partner with finance and accounting stakeholders to identify high-value reporting use cases
- Write clear, executive-level Power BI reports that consolidate data across financial, planning, and grants systems, using them as hands-on teaching examples
- Create training materials, guides, and documentation so the team becomes fully self-sufficient
- Hold office hours and follow-up sessions to reinforce learning and support adoption
- Identify when new data models or relationships are needed and communicate requirements to the IT team
- Work onsite in Chicago hybrid or bi-weekly, as needed for trainings and meetings.
