Reason for Need
These individuals (we need 2) will be responsible for building a Power BI reporting solution using ServiceNow data that mirrors the functionality of an existing Salesforce-connected report. The goal is to provide operations and business leaders visibility into request/ticket information, status, aging, completion and user access details without requiring direct access to the underlying ticketing platform.
Interview Process (1 panel interview)
- Video panel interview with the Hiring Manager and another technical team member (technical/behavioral)
3+ years of strong, hands-on Power BI development experience; 5+ years strongly preferred
Deep hands-on experience working with ServiceNow data, including tables, fields, attributes, relationships, endpoints, and underlying data structures
Experience extracting, interpreting, transforming, and modeling ServiceNow data for use within Power BI reports and dashboards
Demonstrated ability to navigate complex ServiceNow environments where required data may exist across multiple tables/endpoints
Experience recreating or reverse-engineering existing reporting functionality and business logic using a different source system
Strong understanding of data modeling, transformation, relationship mapping, historical reporting, and complex visualization requirements
Ability to independently investigate technical/data challenges and determine appropriate solutions with limited hand-holding
Top soft skill requirements include:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate highly technical concepts for non-technical business stakeholders
Strong problem-solving skills and tenacity when working through ambiguous or technically complex issues
Proactive communication when encountering access issues, dependencies, risks, or project roadblocks
Strong ownership and ability to independently drive a defined deliverable through completion
Collaborative approach and ability to partner effectively with technical, security, identity/access, and operational stakeholders
Comfortable working within a short-duration, highly focused project engagement
Position Summary
R1 is seeking two temporary Power BI Developers to support a focused reporting initiative within the Client Identity & Access team. The primary objective of this engagement is to build a new Power BI reporting solution using ServiceNow data, modeled after the functionality of an existing Power BI report that currently uses Salesforce as its underlying data source. The existing Salesforce solution will remain unchanged and will serve as a functional reference for the new ServiceNow-based reporting experience. The new solution will provide operational and business teams with visibility into request and ticket information without requiring those users to maintain direct ServiceNow ITIL licenses. Users should be able to locate and understand information such as request/ticket details, current status, aging, completion information, assigned resources, user/access requests, and other relevant operational data. This is not simply a dashboard-design engagement. Successful candidates must be capable of understanding the underlying ServiceNow data architecture and business logic, identifying where required information resides, translating that information into an appropriate Power BI data model, and independently troubleshooting issues encountered throughout development.
What this individual will be working on:
The developers will recreate key functionality from an existing Salesforce-connected Power BI reporting solution using ServiceNow as the source of record for the new reporting solution. Requests relevant to this project originate through Sonder, R1's identity and access management platform, and subsequently flow into ServiceNow, where the Client Identity & Access team performs its work. The Power BI solution itself will retrieve the applicable reporting information from ServiceNow rather than directly from Sonder.
The ServiceNow environment is mature and heavily utilized; however, relevant information may be distributed across multiple tables, fields, attributes, and endpoints. The developers will need to understand these relationships and determine how to accurately reproduce the desired reporting functionality. The work may also require interpreting R1-specific business logic. For example, responses captured during request processing can determine whether an item ultimately appears as Closed Complete or Closed Rejected.
• Candidates must be capable of identifying and correctly translating this type of system-specific logic into the reporting solution.
• Existing ServiceNow-connected reporting developed internally may provide useful reference points; however, those dashboards were developed for different datasets and use cases.
• Candidates should therefore be comfortable with both reverse engineering existing functionality and performing net-new development.
Key Responsibilities
• Analyze the existing Salesforce-connected Power BI report to understand its functionality, reporting logic, filters, search capabilities, and end-user experience.
• Design and develop a new Power BI reporting solution using ServiceNow data.
• Identify and map the appropriate ServiceNow tables, fields, attributes, relationships, and endpoints required to support reporting requirements.
• Extract, transform, model, and validate ServiceNow data for use within Power BI.
• Recreate applicable reporting functionality currently supported by the Salesforce-based solution while appropriately adapting the design to ServiceNow's data architecture.
• Develop reporting capabilities that allow operational users to search and filter ticket/request information without requiring direct ServiceNow ITIL access.
• Support reporting of request status, aging, completion, assigned resources, user/access information, historical activity, and other applicable operational metrics.
• Interpret and incorporate R1-specific ServiceNow business rules and field logic into reporting outputs.
• Troubleshoot data-access, data-quality, relationship, performance, and visualization challenges.
• Work with potentially large volumes of historical ServiceNow data and optimize reporting appropriately.
• Validate report outputs against underlying ServiceNow information to ensure accuracy and reliability.
• Partner with Kristin, Mark, and other appropriate R1 stakeholders to clarify requirements and resolve technical questions.
• Proactively identify and communicate dependencies, access limitations, risks, or technical roadblocks.
• Independently manage assigned development work and drive deliverables through documented completion within the three-month project timeline.
Required Skills
• 3+ years of professional, hands-on Power BI development experience, with 5+ years strongly preferred.
• Strong hands-on experience integrating Power BI with ServiceNow data.
• Demonstrated knowledge of ServiceNow tables, fields, attributes, relationships, and data structures.
• Experience identifying and retrieving information distributed across multiple ServiceNow tables or endpoints.
• Strong experience with data extraction, transformation, modeling, relationship mapping, and reporting.
• Experience developing complex Power BI dashboards and reports using significant volumes of historical data.
• Ability to understand existing reporting functionality and translate/rebuild it using a different underlying data source.
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, particularly when working with incomplete documentation or complex system relationships.
• Ability to understand and implement business-specific field logic and status mappings.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
• Ability to work independently with limited day-to-day technical guidance.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to data/reporting accuracy.
• Ability to hit the ground running and deliver within a short-duration engagement.
Preferred Qualifications
• 5+ years of Power BI development experience.
• Extensive experience developing Power BI solutions specifically against ServiceNow datasets.
• Experience working with ServiceNow APIs, endpoints, table structures, or other supported methods of data extraction.
• Experience reverse-engineering or migrating reporting functionality from Salesforce or another enterprise platform into ServiceNow-based reporting.
• Experience working with IAM, access-management, ticketing, request-management, or workflow datasets.
• Experience supporting operational reporting for users who do not have direct access/licenses to the underlying source system.
• Experience troubleshooting complex Power BI data models involving multiple source tables and relationships.
• Experience designing reporting solutions involving significant historical datasets and complex visualizations.
• Experience entering an existing technical environment, quickly assessing prior work, and independently determining a path forward.
• Healthcare/RCM experience is helpful but not required.
Engagement Considerations
The successful candidates will receive technical partnership from R1 when necessary; however, this engagement is not structured for significant day-to-day handholding.
Candidates should be comfortable independently investigating ServiceNow data structures, identifying solutions, escalating true dependencies, and moving work forward.
Resources should proactively identify access requirements and escalate blockers early so that the short project timeline is protected.
Timely system and data access will be an important project dependency.
