As a condition of employment all employees must pass a post offer criminal history background check, physical examination and drug screen. All employees must also submit proof of identity and employment eligibility.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Candidates must possess: • A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) degree from an accredited veterinary medical program. • Current license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Kansas, in good standing with the appropriate licensing authority. • Current registrations and authorization necessary to possess, prescribe, administer, and manage controlled substances as required by Kansas and federal law, including applicable DEA registration. • Minimum of one year of professional experience in shelter medicine, high-volume spay/neuter practice, community veterinary medicine, or a closely related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the position. • Demonstrated surgical proficiency. • Knowledge of shelter medicine, population-health principles, disease control, and animal welfare. • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills. • Ability to maintain detailed medical and administrative records and prepare professional reports. • Ability to effectively prioritize assignments and respond to changing operational demands. • Valid driver's license. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of all applicable Unified Government and Kansas City, Kansas Police Department background and pre-employment requirements. Candidates may be required to complete a supplemental background questionnaire as part of the application process.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to: • Practice high-quality shelter veterinary medicine. • Manage a high-volume clinical and surgical environment. • Perform approximately 30 spay/neuter surgeries during designated high-volume surgical days when operational demand is present and patient safety permits. • Diagnose medical conditions and develop appropriate treatment plans. Kansas City, Kansas 66101-3064 (913) 321-1445 700 Minnesota Ave. • Perform routine and advanced surgical procedures appropriate to shelter medicine. • Perform or coordinate necropsies and prepare detailed professional reports. • Administer and oversee heartworm treatment protocols. • Develop veterinary policies, protocols, and standards of care. • Manage shelter population health and infectious-disease concerns. • Develop strategies that improve animal welfare and positive outcomes. • Lead, train, and support veterinary technicians and clinic personnel. • Develop and manage community veterinary programs. • Communicate effectively with employees, leadership, law enforcement personnel, prosecutors, community partners, and members of the public. • Prepare professional veterinary reports suitable for administrative, regulatory, or criminal proceedings. • Provide professional courtroom testimony when required. • Maintain accurate pharmaceutical and controlled-substance records. • Effectively prioritize multiple competing responsibilities. • Exercise sound professional judgment in high-stress or time-sensitive situations. • Work effectively with a variety of domestic animals and other species encountered through Animal Services operations.
