Position Summary
The Women's Health Nurse Practitioner or Certified Nurse Midwife provides advanced practice care under approved protocols and within the scope authorized by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing and applicable certifying organizations.
This provider delivers comprehensive women's healthcare services, including preventive care, gynecologic care, prenatal and postpartum care, patient education, health promotion, and disease prevention. The CNM may additionally provide antepartum, intrapartum, delivery, postpartum, and newborn care consistent with scope and certification.
Essential Responsibilities
Patient Care & Clinical Practice
- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including physical examinations and medical histories
- Diagnose, treat, and manage acute and chronic women's health conditions
- Develop and implement individualized plans of care
- Provide preventive, gynecologic, reproductive, and wellness services
- Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic testing
- Prescribe medications and treatment plans in accordance with regulatory guidelines
- For CNMs, provide prenatal, labor and delivery, postpartum, and newborn care within scope of practice
- Perform procedures appropriate to training, certification, and demonstrated competency
Collaboration & Care Coordination
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and interdisciplinary team members to ensure high-quality patient care
- Consult and refer patients appropriately when additional expertise is required
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and evidence-based practice activities
- Serve as a clinical resource for patients, families, and staff
Patient Education & Advocacy
- Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and wellness strategies
- Promote preventive care, healthy lifestyles, and informed decision-making
- Advocate for patient needs and coordinate care across settings
- Foster meaningful patient-provider relationships built on trust and communication
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain complete, timely, and accurate medical records
- Comply with organizational policies, regulatory requirements, and professional practice standards
- Participate in ongoing professional development and continuing education
Qualifications
Education
Nurse Practitioner
- Master's or Doctoral degree in Nursing from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program
Certified Nurse Midwife
- Successful completion of an accredited Nurse Midwifery Program
Experience
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in women's health, OB/GYN, or related advanced practice role preferred
Licenses & Certifications
Required:
- Current Louisiana APRN License or eligible.
- Current prescriptive authority and DEA registration (or eligibility)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association
For Nurse Practitioners:
- National certification as a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP) or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) with Women's Health experience
For Certified Nurse Midwives:
- Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) certification through the American Midwifery Certification Board or eligible
Preferred:
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), if applicable
