Empower Others. Build Confidence. Transform Lives. Become a Personal Trainer at Crossroads YMCA!

Position Summary

At the YMCA, personal training is about more than exercise. It's about building relationships, inspiring confidence, and helping individuals make lasting changes toward healthier lifestyles.

As a Personal Trainer, you'll guide members of all fitness levels through personalized workouts, goal setting, and ongoing encouragement. You'll create a welcoming environment where members feel supported, motivated, and connected to the YMCA.

What Success Looks Like

Successful Personal Trainers:

  • Help members achieve meaningful fitness goals through individualized coaching.
  • Build lasting relationships that encourage consistency and member retention.
  • Deliver safe, effective, and engaging training experiences.
  • Create an inclusive environment where members feel confident regardless of their fitness level.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, preparation, and a commitment to continued learning.

What You'll Be Doing

Personal Training & Member Engagement

  • Develop individualized workout plans and arrive prepared for scheduled appointments.
  • Guide members through strength and conditioning exercises using proper techniques.
  • Assist members with goal setting, equipment orientation, and fitness-related lifestyle changes.
  • Build positive relationships through encouragement, accountability, and ongoing support.

Fitness Safety & Professional Standards

  • Follow YMCA and American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) strength and conditioning guidelines.
  • Conduct routine fitness equipment safety checks and promptly report concerns.
  • Enforce fitness center policies and maintain a safe training environment.
  • Provide guidance within your professional scope, referring members to medical professionals when appropriate.

Professional Development & YMCA Engagement

  • Maintain required certifications and complete assigned training.
  • Stay informed about fitness trends, techniques, and industry best practices.
  • Support YMCA special events and annual fundraising campaign efforts.
  • Collaborate with team members to deliver an exceptional member experience.

What You Should Know Before Applying

Personal training at the YMCA goes beyond designing workouts. You'll work with members who have different goals, abilities, and levels of experience. Building trust, adapting your approach, and helping individuals stay motivated are essential parts of the position.

You May Be a Great Fit If You...

  • Find satisfaction in helping others achieve goals they once thought were out of reach.
  • Enjoy one-on-one coaching and getting to know people beyond their fitness goals.
  • Are patient, encouraging, and comfortable adapting your approach to different personalities.
  • Take initiative and can manage your appointments and preparation independently.
  • Believe fitness should be accessible and welcoming to everyone.
  • Enjoy learning new techniques and finding creative ways to keep members engaged.

This Role May Not Be the Best Fit If You...

  • Are looking for a position primarily focused on your own workouts or fitness goals.
  • Prefer a highly structured routine with little variation in appointments or member needs.
  • Find ongoing relationship-building and member motivation less appealing.
  • Are uncomfortable adjusting your coaching style to accommodate different abilities and experience levels.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Minimum of six months of related experience.
  • Knowledge of strength and conditioning principles and safe exercise practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to read and follow instructions, procedures, and training materials.
  • Passion for healthy living, continued learning, and working with youth and families.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to demonstrate exercises and perform job responsibilities.
  • Ability to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods, with occasional bending or stooping.
