Performance Test Engineer

Role Summary

As aPerformance Test Engineer, you'll join ourShared Technology organization, working in a cross-functional environment where innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement are part of everyday life.

You will design and execute performance testing strategies that help ensure ING's enterprise technology solutions remain fast, stable, and scalable under pressure. Working closely with engineers, architects, product partners, and platform teams, you'll contribute to performance engineering practices that support critical banking services across the organization.

What You'll Do

• Design, develop, and execute performance, load, stress, and endurance tests for enterprise applications and platforms.
• Build and maintain scalable performance test frameworks using Gatling and Java.
• Analyze application behavior, identify bottlenecks, and provide recommendations to improve performance and reliability.
• Collaborate closely with development, QA, infrastructure, and platform engineering teams throughout the software delivery lifecycle.
• Support performance engineering activities across large-scale distributed systems and cloud-based environments.
• Define and monitor performance benchmarks, KPIs, and service-level objectives.
• Contribute to performance testing best practices, standards, and automation strategies across the organization.
• Produce performance reports and present findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What We're Looking For

Required Skills & Experience

• Proven experience as aPerformance Test Engineer, Performance Engineer, or similar role.
• Strong hands-on experience withGatling for performance and load testing.
• Strong proficiency inJava and/or JavaScript for scripting and test automation.
• Experience designing and executingload, stress, scalability, and endurance tests.
• Experience testingdistributed systems and enterprise applications.
• Strong understanding ofperformance frameworks, workload modeling, and non-functional requirements (NFRs).
• Ability to analyze performance metrics, logs, and traces to identify bottlenecks and recommend optimizations.
• Knowledge of network protocols and their impact on performance, includingHTTP, WebSockets, FTP, messaging protocols, and Kafka.
• Experience working withobservability and monitoring tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, or similar platforms.
• Experience integrating performance testing intoCI/CD pipelines, preferably usingAzure DevOps.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.

Nice to Have

• Experience with additional performance testing tools such asJMeter and k6.
• Exposure toDocker, Kubernetes, and containerized environments.
• Experience working withcloud platforms and cloud-native architectures.
• Knowledge of messaging systems and event-driven architectures.
• Familiarity with payment and banking message formats such aspain, camt, and pacs.
• Strong understanding ofJVM tuning, latency profiling, and application performance optimization.
• Experience testing high-volume, mission-critical systems in thebanking, financial services, or payments domain.
• Experience defining and influencingperformance standards, SLAs, and scalabilitystrategies across engineering teams.
