Friends of Ruby supports 2SLGBTQIA+ youth aged 16–29 through mental health services, social programs, and housing. We operate a Youth Drop-In Centre offering barrier-free counselling, case management, and community programming, alongside a Transitional Home providing emergency and long-term housing with life-skills support. Our work is rooted in intersectional, anti-oppressive, and decolonized approaches, and we are committed to treating everyone with dignity, respect, and inclusion.
The Part-Time Food Service Coordinator oversees meal planning, food preparation, kitchen operations, inventory management, and food safety while ensuring residents have consistent access to nutritious and culturally responsive meals.
This position works a consistent weekend schedule of 4 hour shifts every Saturday and Sunday to prepare brunch and dinner, with occasional relief coverage to support operational and program needs.
About the Role
As a Part-Time Food Service Coordinator, you will be responsible for:
- Planning and preparing nutritious meals, snacks, and weekend food service to ensure residents have consistent access to healthy and culturally responsive food options.
- Supporting community meals, cooking programs, and food-related activities that build life skills, encourage healthy eating, and strengthen food security among residents.
- Managing food vendors, catering services, donations, inventory, and food budgets to maintain efficient and cost-effective kitchen operations.
- Maintaining a clean, safe, and organized kitchen environment by following food handling best practices, public health requirements, and organizational standards.
- Building positive relationships with residents and community partners to create welcoming, inclusive opportunities for participation in food programs and initiatives.
- Monitoring food program outcomes and identifying opportunities to enhance service delivery, resident engagement, and overall program effectiveness.
Your Competencies
Trauma-Informed, Population-Specific Engagement: Builds trust and supports resident well-being by applying trauma-informed principles and respecting cultural, personal, and lived experiences during food service and programming.
Safety Awareness & Situational Judgment: Maintains a safe and hygienic environment by assessing risks, following food safety standards, and making sound decisions to prevent hazards and respond appropriately to concerns.
Consistent, High-Quality Service Delivery: Provides reliable and professional food service by ensuring meals, programs, and kitchen operations consistently meet organizational and public health standards.
Applying Relevant Service-Based Expertise in Direct Support: Enhances resident experiences through meal planning, food preparation, food safety knowledge, and facilitation of food-focused activities and programs.
Organization & Administration: Effectively manages food inventories, donations, budgets, schedules, and kitchen operations through strong planning, time management, and record-keeping practices.
Collaboration & Community Building: Works collaboratively with residents, staff, volunteers, and community partners to foster engagement, participation, and a positive community environment.
Required Credentials
- Post-secondary education in a relevant field such as Culinary Arts, Nutrition, Dietetics, Health Promotion, Social Services, Community Work, or equivalent experience.
- Experience in food handling, cooking, meal planning, and food service delivery, preferably in a shelter, housing, drop-in, or community-based setting.
- Current Food Handler Certification required (or obtain upon hire).
- Current CPR/First Aid Certification required (or obtain upon hire).
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) training is an asset.
