As a trusted business partner, the Controller works closely with executive and operational leaders to provide accurate financial insights, strengthen processes, improve profitability, and support sound business decisions. This is an excellent opportunity for a results-oriented professional who enjoys both strategic involvement and day-to-day leadership, and who wants to make a meaningful impact on the continued success of our organization.

Immediate Priorities

  • Stabilize payroll and timekeeping processes and establish effective review and approval controls.
  • Implement consistent project-level tracking of labor, materials, purchased services, and direct costs.
  • Establish disciplined accounts payable, vendor management, purchasing documentation, and invoice approval processes.
  • Strengthen inventory controls for parts, supplies, consumables, and other materials.
  • Support business system integration efforts and reporting improvements.
  • Provide concise weekly and monthly business reports that enable operational and financial decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership and Reporting

  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
  • Prepare and analyze financial statements, forecasts, budgets, cash-flow reporting, and management reports.
  • Ensure the accuracy and integrity of the general ledger, balance sheet, reconciliations, and supporting records.
  • Analyze financial performance, explain variances and trends, and recommend actions to improve results.

Inventory and Cost Accounting

  • Oversee inventory accounting, reconciliation, valuation, controls, reserves, and reporting.
  • Lead cycle-count and physical inventory programs and resolve inventory discrepancies.
  • Maintain costing methodologies and analyze material, labor, overhead, and production variances.
  • Partner with operations to improve inventory accuracy, cost control, margins, and profitability.

Audit, Controls, and Compliance

  • Lead external financial audits, inventory observations, tax requests, lender reporting, and related examinations.
  • Maintain effective internal controls, accounting policies, documentation, and approval processes.
  • Ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and applicable company policies.
  • Address audit findings and control gaps through documented corrective action.

Budgeting and Operational Support

  • Lead annual budgeting and periodic forecasting activities.
  • Monitor cash, working capital, receivables, payables, purchasing commitments, and inventory investment.
  • Support pricing, margin analysis, capital expenditures, staffing, and other business decisions.
  • Develop meaningful financial and operational performance measures for leadership.

Office Leadership and Administration

  • Lead, develop, and oversee office and administrative staff.
  • Establish procedures, workflows, calendars, document retention standards, and cross-training programs.
  • Serve as the General Manager's primary administrative partner.
  • Escalate operational risks, control issues, vendor concerns, and employee matters promptly and professionally.

Team Leadership and Process Improvement

  • Lead, coach, and develop accounting staff while establishing clear responsibilities and review expectations.
  • Oversee core accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, and payroll interfaces.
  • Establish strong procedures, documentation, backup coverage, and accountability across the accounting function.
  • Identify and implement practical process, system, reporting, and control improvements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • CPA, CMA, or comparable advanced accounting credential preferred.
  • Eight or more years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including hands-on controllership or senior accounting leadership responsibility.
  • Strong experience with financial reporting, general-ledger accounting, month-end close, budgeting, forecasting, and audit preparation.
  • Strong knowledge of inventory accounting, cost accounting, physical inventory, cycle counts, reserves, and variance analysis.
  • Experience in manufacturing, fabrication, machining, mining, industrial services, equipment repair, project-based operations, or a similar environment preferred.
  • Experience with ERP systems, financial reporting tools, process improvement, and advanced Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to lead accounting staff and partner effectively with operational leaders, executives, auditors, lenders, and advisors.

Work Environment

This is an on-site position in the Belle, West Virginia area. The role operates primarily in an office environment but requires regular interaction with manufacturing, warehouse, and operational areas.
