Role Summary

An Assistant Golf Course Superintendentis a key management role and the second-in-command of the golf course maintenance department. They work directly with the golf course superintendent to manage daily operations, supervise the grounds crew, and maintain optimal turf and playing conditions.

Responsibilities

• Daily Operations & Scheduling: Helps develop daily and seasonal work schedules for mowing, course setup, and maintenance.
• Turf & Agronomic Management: Assists in monitoring turf health, applying fertilizers and plant protectants, and executing cultural practices like aerification, vertical mowing, and topdressing.
• Irrigation & Water Management: Oversees irrigation systems, monitors soil moisture, and performs or directs repairs on pumps, drainage, and lines.
• Staff Supervision & Training: Assists with hiring, training, scheduling, and supervising groundskeepers, equipment operators, and crew foremen.
• Chemical & Regulatory Compliance: Calibrates and supervises the application of pesticides and herbicides, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental laws.
• Leadership in Absence: Assumes full operational and management responsibilities of the golf course in the absence of the superintendent 
• Work closely with the Golf Course Superintendent to communicate tournaments and events, course conditions and maintenance scheduling.
• Plus, other work-related tasks as needed

Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma is typically a minimum requirement, though a two-year degree, certificate, or four-year degree in turfgrass science, agronomy, or a related field is heavily preferred.
• Experience: Generally, requires 1 to 3+ years of hands-on experience in golf course turf maintenance. 
• Licenses & Certifications:
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • State-certified pesticide applicator/restricted-use license. 
• Skills: Strong knowledge of turfgrass cultural practices, irrigation mechanics, equipment operation, and basic budgeting.

Physical Requirements 

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.
• Ability to climb stairs, ladders, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, or reach frequently.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull objects up to 50 pounds regularly and occasionally heavier with assistance.
• Manual dexterity to operate tools, equipment, and machinery safely.
• Visual acuity to inspect equipment, read gauges, and perform detailed tasks.
• Hearing ability to detect alarms, equipment sounds, and verbal instructions in noisy environments.
• Ability to work in varying environmental conditions (heat, cold, dust, noise, outdoors).
• Ability to wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Ability to work varying schedules, including evenings, weekends, on-call, and overtime as required.

Pay and Benefits

$ 65,000 to $75,000 per year, depending on education and experience.
