Under the general supervision of a Lieutenant, the Sergeant plays a crucial role in maintaining a safe and secure environment for the community. This position involves overseeing officers and civilian staff, managing patrol operations, and providing leadership. The Sergeant is responsible for enforcing departmental orders and state laws, enhancing communication between staff and management, and mentoring subordinates. Additionally, they ensure the safety and security of all individuals on College property.ESSENTIAL JOBDUTIES
- Manage daily patrol operations to ensure the safety and security of the campusenvironment.
- Observe and evaluate the performance of team members, providing mentorship as needed andrecognizing commendable actions and behaviors.
- Conduct shift change roll calls to ensure all officers are properly equipped and informed abouttheir duties, special orders, and other relevant information.
- Successfully address a broad range of issues using sound judgment and discretion, ensuringeffective crisis management and conflict resolution.
- Proactively identify persistent challenges and recommend new procedures or protocoladjustments to enhance department operations.
- Assume the responsibilities of Shift Commander in the absence of a Lieutenant, ensuringcontinuity of leadership and operational integrity.
- Serve as a positive role model and mentor to both subordinates and peers, fostering a culture ofprofessionalism and ethical behavior.
- Implement the College's emergency preparedness plan during disasters and other significantincidents, coordinating response efforts to maintain campus safety.
- Participate in campus safety programs and collaborate closely with Emerson communitymembers, groups, and other college departments to address public safety concerns.
- Act as a liaison with other public safety agencies and the court system, enhancingcommunication and collaborative efforts to improve overall public safety.
QUALIFICATIONS –Qualifications are deemed required or preferred and represent what is needed to perform the job effectively.
- Three years of policing experience, preferably in a campussetting.
- Musthave graduated from a full-time police recruittraining academy accredited by the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council or the Massachusetts State Police (MSP) Academy for campus police officers. Graduates from out-of-state academies or the Massachusetts Reserve Intermittent Training Academy with MPTC Basic Training Exemption will also beconsidered.
- Ability to obtain a valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operator’s license and the ability to beinsured by the College’s automobile liability insurer.
- Successful completion of annual fitness for duty assessment, including a backgroundinvestigation, a psychological evaluation, and a medical release.
- Must meet theApril 1, 2020, State Police requirements for obtaining Special State Police Officerpowers as listed in 515 CMR 5.04: “General Standards for Appointment, (1) Applicant. Must not be less than 21 years old, a United States citizen, and an employee of an agency described in M.G.L. c. 22C, s56 through 68.”
- Must meet POST Standards for policecertification

- This position works both indoors andoutdoors.
- Exposed to moderate noiselevels.
- Occasionally exposed to extreme temperatures and inclement weatherconditions.
- Exposed to dust, oils, chemicals, andfumes.
- Exposed to hazardous driving conditions, moving mechanical parts, and the risk of electricshock.
- May occasionally work in a confined space or a dangerousplace.
- May occasionally be exposed to bodilyfluids.
- Must be able to work different shifts, including weekends, holidays, and overtime shifts asrequired.

COMPENSATION
Compensation for this position will be between $34.85 - $42.75 hourly, commensurate with experience.
PARKING
Employees are also eligible for subsidized parking at the Boston Common Garage.
Compensation: $35.81 - $43.95 hourly, commensurate with experience.Â
