Position Summary
The OEHS Specialist supports AdvanSix occupational and environmental health and safety programs with emphasis on hazardous building materials, industrial hygiene, Hazard Communication and the Chemical Hygiene Program. Reporting to the IH / OH Manager, this role assists with field assessments, exposure monitoring, sampling, contractor coordination, regulatory documentation, laboratory chemical hygiene practices, and ISO 9001-aligned quality expectations in a chemical manufacturing environment. The position helps promote safe work execution, regulatory compliance, effective risk reduction, and alignment with AdvanSix site standards and Responsible Care® principles.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Support AdvanSix OEHS programs involving hazardous building materials, asbestos, lead-based paint, mold, indoor air quality, Hazard Communication, the Chemical Hygiene Program, Quality Lab operations, and industrial hygiene hazards.
- Conduct field assessments, inspections, exposure monitoring, sample collection, and hazardous building materials surveys under senior OEHS/CIH guidance.
- Support asbestos and lead inspections, sampling plans, abatement oversight, clearance activities, contractor coordination, and project documentation.
- Support approved contractors performing hazardous building materials work to ensure safe execution and site compliance.
- Prepare or support field notes, sampling records, chain-of-custody forms, regulatory notifications, technical reports, work scopes, and compliance documentation.
- Apply OSHA General Industry and Construction Standards, EPA requirements, state asbestos and lead requirements, AdvanSix site procedures, Responsible Care® expectations, and applicable quality-system documentation practices.
- Support the site Chemical Hygiene Program by assisting with laboratory hazard assessments, chemical storage and handling reviews, ventilation and exposure control guidance, PPE evaluations, training support, and documentation for Quality Lab activities.
- Partner with Quality Lab personnel, Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, HSE, Occupational Health, contractors, project managers, and site leadership to support safe work execution, ISO 9001-aligned procedures, audit readiness, corrective actions, and continuous improvement.
- Support risk recognition, exposure control, corrective action tracking, continuous improvement, and travel to AdvanSix sites as needed.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Environmental Health & Safety, Safety Management, Industrial Safety, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, or a related field; OR an Associate’s degree or High School diploma/GED with relevant industry certifications and demonstrated experience in environmental, health, and safety (EHS), industrial hygiene, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 3 years' experience in OH, IH, EHS, environmental consulting, hazardous building materials, laboratory safety, Quality Lab support, construction safety, or related work.
- Knowledge of occupational exposure assessment, hazardous materials, chemical manufacturing, laboratory chemical safety, environmental compliance, and workplace health and safety practices.
- Working knowledge of OSHA General Industry and Construction Standards, EPA requirements, Responsible Care®, and related HSE regulations.
- Knowledge of Hazard Communication requirements, including chemical labeling, safety data sheets, employee training, and chemical inventory support.
- Knowledge of Chemical Hygiene Program requirements and laboratory safety practices, including chemical storage, labeling, ventilation, PPE, exposure controls, and laboratory hazard assessments.
- Experience supporting ISO 9001-aligned quality systems, Quality Lab operations, audit readiness, procedure adherence, corrective actions, and controlled documentation.
- Ability to safely perform field work in active manufacturing, construction, maintenance, and occupied building environments.
- Ability to collect samples, document observations, follow protocols, maintain accurate records, and prepare clear technical documentation.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and familiarity with HSE systems such as Velocity, Cority, Enablon, 3Eprotect, SAP or similar platforms.
- Strong analytical, technical writing, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:
- State-approved asbestos and/or lead training or certification, including credentials applicable to Virginia, Pennsylvania, or other states where work may be performed.
- OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER, OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour General Industry/Construction training, or related health and safety certification.
- Experience with asbestos, lead, hazardous building materials, renovation, demolition, construction, maintenance, abatement monitoring, or clearance sampling.
- Experience with field sampling equipment, direct-reading instruments, chain-of-custody documentation, laboratory coordination, and technical report preparation.
- Certification such as ASP, GSP, CSP, or CHMM.
- Understanding of industrial hygiene principles, specialized equipment and instrumentation, and qualitative and quantitative exposure assessments.
- Experience with safety compliance management programs.
- Experience with Quality Lab environments, laboratory chemical hygiene practices, ISO 9001 quality systems, internal audits, management of change, corrective and preventive action processes, and documentation control.
Work Environment:
- Work is performed in chemical manufacturing settings, including offices, laboratories, maintenance areas, warehouses, utilities, outdoor process areas, production units, construction zones, and occupied buildings.
- Laboratory support may include Quality Lab environments operating under ISO 9001-aligned procedures, chemical hygiene expectations, sample handling requirements, and controlled documentation practices.
- Field work may include active operating areas, exposure assessments, inspections, sampling, job observations, and documentation of health and safety conditions.
- Work may involve controlled exposure to chemical, physical, ergonomic, noise, heat stress, dust, vapor, fume, asbestos, lead, and other industrial hygiene hazards managed through established controls and PPE.
- Employees must follow site safety requirements, including permit-to-work, lockout/tagout, line break, confined space, hot work, elevated work, contractor safety, emergency response, and stop-work expectations.
- Required PPE may include safety glasses, hard hat, hearing protection, chemical-resistant gloves, protective clothing, safety footwear, respiratory protection, fall protection, or other task-specific equipment.
The expected salary range for this position is $78k to $110k.
