BehavioralHealthSpecialistI(BHSI)–PositionSummary

UnderthedirectionoftheClinicalNurseManager(Inpatient),ProgramDirector(Partial),andUnitChargeRN,theBehavioralHealthSpecialistI(BHSI)providesdirectcare,safety,andtherapeuticsupporttochildrenandadolescentswithinaninterdisciplinarytreatmentteam.TheBHSIcontributestothestructureofthetherapeuticmilieuandisresponsibleforimplementing,observing,anddocumentingmilieuprogrammingunderthesupervisionofaRegisteredNurse.

KeyResponsibilities

A.MilieuManagement&DirectPatientCare

• Maintain a safe and therapeutic environmentandactivelyengagewithassignedpatientsthroughouttheshift.

• Participateindevelopingandimplementingmilieucareplansaccordingtounitpolicies.

• Maintainanddocumentrequiredlevelsofpatientobservationeachshift.

• Supportvisitingparentsandprovideinformationasdirectedbythetreatmentteam.

• Supervisepatientsduringdailyroutinesandassistwithactivitiesofdailylivingandhygiene.

• Identify,report,andhelpresolveactualorpotentialunitproblems.

• Providetimelyverbalreportinganddocumentationfollowingcriticalincidents.

• Completerequireddocumentation,includingincidentreportsandintakematerials.

• Participateinrestraintdebriefings.

• Carryoutdelegatedassignmentsandreportcompletionbeforeshiftchange.

• Intervenetherapeuticallyindisruptiveorunsafesituations.

• Maintainprofessionalboundariesatalltimes.

B.Compliance,Training&ProfessionalStandards

• AdheretoallHospital,Department,andProgrampoliciesandprocedures.

• Attendpeerreview,staffmeetings,andrequiredtrainings.

• Participateinongoingstaffdevelopment.

C.TreatmentPlanning&ClinicalCollaboration

• Supportthedevelopmentofatherapeuticalliancewithpatientsandfamiliesatadmission.

• Assistwiththeseparationprocessandhelporientpatientstothehospitalenvironment.

• DocumentobjectiveobservationswithineachshiftandcommunicatefindingstotheassignedRN.

• Reviewmilieucareplansdailyandrecommendrevisionsbasedonobservations.

• Communicatepatientcareplanstounitstaffandcollaboratewithinterdisciplinaryproviders.

• Participateintreatmentteammeetings,rounds,patient‑specificdiscussions,andhand‑offreports.

• DocumentsignificantobservationsinthemedicalrecordandKardexinatimelymanner.

• Shareknowledgeandexperiencewithcolleaguesthroughformalandinformallearningopportunities.

• Adaptcareapproachestomeetthedevelopmentalneedsofdiversechildrenandadolescents.

D.TherapeuticProgramming&BehavioralSupport

• Supportandcontributetobehavioralmanagementandcareplandevelopment.

• Teachandassistwithactivitiesofdailylivingbasedonpatientability.

• Co‑leadcommunitymeetings,milieugroups,socialskillsgroups,andprogram‑specificactivities.

• Setconsistenttherapeuticlimitsalignedwithhospitalandunitstandards.

• ImplementbehavioralprogramsincollaborationwiththeRNandtreatmentteam.

• Organizeandparticipateinunitactivities,includingphysicalandsocialdevelopmentprogramming.

• Assistwithfamilytrainingandteachingvisitsasassigned.

• Modeltherapeuticinterpersonalinteractionswithpatientsandfamilies.

• Co‑leadtherapygroupswithclinicians.

• Supportandparticipateinrecreationtherapyprograms.

• Respondtocrisesusingtheleastrestrictive,safeintervention.

• Seeksupervisionproactivelyandincorporatefeedbackintoperformance.

• PerformotherdutiesasassignedbytheChargeRN.

• Maybeaskedtosupportcomparabledutiesinotherclinicalsettingsbasedonhospitalneeds.

MinimumQualifications

Education

• BaccalaureatedegreeinaHumanServicesfieldpreferred.

• EquivalenteducationandexperiencemaybeconsideredatthediscretionoftheHiringManager.

Knowledge&Skills

• Demonstratedabilityandwillingnesstolearnrole‑relatedskills.

• Knowledgenecessarytoprovidedevelopmentallyandculturallyinformedcareacrossthelifespan.

• SafetyCareCertificationrequired(orabilitytoobtain).

• Abilitytoremaincalmandmakesounddecisionsduringcrisissituations.

• Abilitytoparticipateinphysicalmanagementofpatients,including:

  • Liftingupto50lbs

Experience
