Job Description

Director - Credit Portfolio Risk is a highly visible leadership role within the European Credit Risk Management function, reporting directly to the Chief Credit Officer for Europe. The successful candidate will combine delegated credit approval authority, portfolio oversight, governance leadership, and strategic risk advisory responsibilities across a diverse range of credit portfolios including corporate lending, payments, institutional exposures, and structured credit investments.

The role offers exposure to senior management, executive committees, and Board-level decision making, making it an excellent opportunity for an experienced credit risk professional seeking to broaden their leadership impact and portfolio management expertise.

Key Responsibilities:

Credit Decisioning & Approval Authority Framework Oversight

Act as a Credit Approver across USBE’s credit portfolios, exercising independent delegated authority on larger credit proposals.

Contribute to the effective operation and periodic review of the Bank’s delegated credit approval framework, including consistency of decision-making and performance outcomes.

Support the development and consistent application of portfolio-wide decisioning standards, including challenge expectations, documentation quality, and evidencing of credit rationale.

Escalate and advise on complex, borderline, or high-risk transactions - including structured credit exposures -requiring independent review of structural, collateral, and concentration risks.

Governance & Committee Leadership

Act as a key driver of the effectiveness of the Credit Committee, shaping the agenda, the quality of materials, and the standard of debate in line with its Terms of Reference.

Own the governance architecture supporting the Credit Committee, ensuring its sub-forums operate with clear purpose, strong discipline, and consistent escalation of the right issues.

Set the standard for governance outputs - insight-driven, forward-looking, and explicitly linked to risk appetite and portfolio resilience - so that committee discussion focuses on decisions rather than data.

Act as a key advisor to the Chief Credit Officer on portfolio risk, emerging risks, and credit governance matters.

Portfolio Stewardship

Support the development and ongoing refinement of the Bank’s credit portfolio profile by providing forward-looking portfolio insights, risk appetite analysis, and recommendations for senior management consideration.

Monitor performance against credit risk appetite metrics and limits, escalating breaches, trends or emerging concerns for senior management review.

Assess macroeconomic, geopolitical, sectoral and regulatory developments and provide analysis to support portfolio positioning and risk appetite considerations.

Oversee portfolio-level risk identification, including concentrations, emerging risks, and forward-looking vulnerabilities.

Contribute to scenario analysis and stress testing activities, ensuring outputs inform strategy, limits, and risk mitigation actions.

Coordinate the review of credit risk elements associated with the Strategic Plan and ICAAP on behalf of the Credit Risk Management function.

Management Information & Portfolio Insights

Lead the Management Information (MI) framework for credit risk, ensuring senior stakeholders receive clear, decision-ready insights on portfolio performance and risk profile.

Oversee the production of high-quality reporting on credit trends, early warning indicators, and emerging risks.

Translate portfolio risk analysis and insights to outputs that help inform capital, stress testing and provisioning processes.

Provide regular, concise, and impactful updates to senior management, including the Credit Committee and other senior Risk Committees.

Ensure MI supports proactive risk management with portfolio risk analytics and early warning frameworks.

Cross-Functional Leadership

Act as a point of contact for credit portfolio matters and credit MI across Risk, Finance, Treasury, and the First Line of Defence.

Collaborate with peers to ensure consistent alignment between risk appetite, policy, portfolio composition, provisioning, capital considerations, and business activity.

Promote strong second-line independence while maintaining constructive and effective challenge.

Leadership & People Management

Lead, develop, and manage a small team of Second Line credit approvers, ensuring strong technical capability, sound judgement, and alignment to risk appetite.

Set clear expectations on culture, accountability, and quality of judgement.

Ensure appropriate resourcing and capability across generalist and specialist areas.

Foster a culture of continuous improvement, technical excellence, and disciplined risk management.

Experience & Qualifications:

Typically 15 - 20 years’ experience in credit risk management within a European or international banking environment.

Experience operating under delegated credit authority and providing independent challenge on complex credit transactions.

Experience across multiple asset classes, with exposure to specialist or complex portfolios (structured credit exposure is advantageous).

Strong understanding of European regulatory expectations including risk governance and oversight standards.

Sound judgement, credibility, and ability to influence at senior management / executive level.
