Senior Engineer, Business Systems – Distribution Center Applications

The Senior Engineer, Business Systems – Distribution Center Applications is the senior technical owner for the application portfolio that runs Petco's distribution center network.  This incumbent partners across Supply Chain, Merchandising, Store Operations, and IT to design, implement, and sustain the systems that move product from vendor to DC to store, e-commerce customer, and pet parent.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Technical Ownership & Solution Design

• Owns functional area/feature(s) development, implementation, design, solution, and architecture for assigned distribution center applications end to end.
• Takes on the most complex tasks and problem-solving efforts within the DC applications portfolio, including escalated production issues that impact fulfillment throughput.
• Has system and business domain oversight, serving as the authoritative point of reference for how DC applications interoperate with upstream and downstream platforms.
• Demonstrates superior understanding of concepts and tools, applies them effectively, and recommends and drives adoption of new concepts, tools, and engineering practices across the team.

Requirements, Reviews & Governance

• Conducts software and hardware requirements reviews, preliminary and critical design reviews, and software acceptance reviews.
• Leads peer code and design review, ensuring solutions meet performance, scalability, security, and supportability standards before promotion to DC production environments.
• Partners on peak-season readiness, change control, and cutover planning for DC go-lives and upgrades.

Data & Business Analysis

• Identifies, collects, and provides analysis of data, and matches it to user need, translating operational metrics (units per hour, order cycle time, inventory accuracy, dock-to-stock) into engineering priorities.
• Has a deep understanding across business domains and thinks in terms of the whole business, not a single system or function.

Stakeholder Partnership & Continuous Improvement

• Ensures objectives are being met by evaluating the ongoing effectiveness of current plans, programs, and initiatives; consulting with business partners, managers, co-workers, and other key stakeholders; and soliciting, evaluating, and applying suggestions for improving efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
• Acts as a mentor and technical coach to engineers and analysts; elevates the capability of the broader DC applications team.
• Provides on-call and after-hours support consistent with 24/7 distribution operations.

Systems in Scope — Petco Distribution Center Applications

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Supply Chain, or a related field; equivalent combined education and experience considered.
• Minimum of 5+ years of professional experience in business systems engineering, application engineering, or supply chain technology.
• 5+ years of hands-on experience with distribution center, warehouse management, or fulfillment applications in a multi-site retail, e-commerce, or 3PL environment.
• Demonstrated experience owning a functional area or platform end to end — design through production support.
• Proven ability to lead requirements, preliminary design, critical design, and software acceptance reviews.
• Strong SQL and data analysis skills; experience with system integration patterns (APIs, EDI, messaging/middleware).
• Experience supporting 24/7 operations, including peak/holiday readiness and on-call rotation.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with material handling automation (WCS/WES), voice picking, RF/mobile device management, or robotics integration.
• Cloud platform experience (GCP, AWS, or Azure) and modern CI/CD practices.
• Experience in pet specialty, grocery, or other retail with perishable/live-goods handling requirements.
• Agile/Scrum delivery experience; APICS, CSCP, or equivalent supply chain certification.
