The Opportunity: 
Working with the Cape Breton Post newsroom, the successful candidate will report on news and current events in Cape Breton, with a particular focus on the Cape Breton Regional Municipality(CBRM)and surrounding communities. The successful candidate will live in this area and be expected to break news, while also being able to write longer news features and explanatory pieces. Applicants are expected to have excellent news judgment and an understanding of issues thatimpactCape Breton. They must have strengths inaccurate, clean reporting, and a proven ability toinitiate stories and enterprise features. Candidates must be familiar with emerging digital trends and opportunities, be able to shoot video with a mobile device, and know how toleverage social media and digital platforms to break news and reach audiences. They must be comfortable with filing stories for multiple platforms, often on tight deadlines, and be keen to learn and experiment to find new ways to tell stories and engage readers. 
 
Whatyou’ll do:

• Reporting andwriting stories with aCBRM focus for print, web, and mobile audiences — as well as tailoring content to meet the varying needs of those platforms.
• Initiating and developing ideas for enterprise stories and investigative projects.
• Cultivating sources andestablishingexpertisein order to break stories andset the news agenda.
• Filing video clips for digital platforms; working with digital teams to create interactive maps and graphics, searchable databases, and other multimedia elements.

Who you are:

• Previous experience at a news organization.
• Fluency in digital platforms, multimediajournalism and social media.
• Ability to work quickly and independently, meet multiple deadlines, and make efficient decisions.
• Familiarity with data journalism and investigativereporting an asset.
• Strong understanding of issues,industries and attributes unique toCape Breton.
• Ability to work remotely as part of a newsroom team.
• Possess a valid driver’slicence and vehicle.

Compensation:

Employment offers presented to the selected candidate are based on a combination of qualifications, experience, responsibilities of the role and the candidate's location.

This is a unionized position subject to the terms and conditions of the collective agreement.

Base Salary: $40,319-$60,000
