About Monocle

Monocle is an independent media brand with a global reputation for its coverage of international affairs, design, travel, fashion and much more besides. Launched in London in 2007, the business now encompasses our flagship magazine, daily newsletters, a round-the-clock radio station, books, international events, retail stores, e-commerce and cafés.

The role

We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic Junior Designer to join our creative team at Midori House.

Monocle publishes 10 issues of its magazine each year, alongside Konfekt and a growing portfolio of annuals, newspapers and books. This is a broad, hands-on role offering the opportunity to develop your creative and technical skills across a varied range of predominantly print projects.

Working closely with our creative, editorial, photography and production teams, you will help design pages and sections, prepare artwork for production and maintain the high standards and distinctive visual identity found across our publications. You may also contribute to creative materials for Monocle’s global events and retail stores.

Key responsibilities

  • Supporting the design and production of pages across Monocle and Konfekt magazines, books, annuals and newspapers
  • Translating approved concepts, templates and creative direction into carefully considered live designs
  • Working thoughtfully with typography, image placement, page composition, grids and visual hierarchy
  • Preparing accurate, production-ready artwork and files for print
  • Reviewing PDFs, colour proofs and cromalins and helping to resolve any inconsistencies or production issues
  • Working with photography, illustration and other visual assets
  • Creating monthly point-of-sale posters and selected materials for our publications, events and retail activity
  • Managing several tasks at once and delivering high-quality work within tight publishing deadlines

About you

You will be a design or creative-industry graduate, or have equivalent practical experience, with up to two years’ professional experience in design, publishing or a related creative environment.

You will also bring:

  • A strong portfolio demonstrating excellent design fundamentals and a genuine interest in editorial and print design
  • Good working knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
  • An understanding of typography, layout, composition and image selection
  • Excellent attention to detail and an appreciation of Monocle’s visual and editorial outlook
  • An interest in photography, illustration and visual storytelling
  • A willingness to learn, take direction and respond thoughtfully to feedback
  • A collaborative, organised and dependable approach
  • The ability to remain calm and focused while working to tight deadlines

An understanding of preparing artwork and files for print would be an advantage.

What we offer

  • 23 days’ annual leave, plus bank holidays and a seven-day Christmas shutdown
  • Private medical and life insurance
  • Daily breakfast at Midori House
  • Discounts across Monocle shops and cafés
  • A dog-friendly office in the heart of Marylebone
  • The opportunity to develop your craft within a curious, smart and fast-paced international creative environment

This is a full-time, office-based position at Midori House in Marylebone. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK. To apply, please submit your CV and link to your portfolio.
