Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Molder II / Press Operator to operate mechanical, hydraulic, robotic, and manual presses used to manufacture complex molded products.

This is an advanced manufacturing position requiring strong mechanical aptitude, blueprint reading, precision measurement, math skills, machine setup, quality inspection, and troubleshooting.

The Molder II works with more complex and higher-value products requiring intricate shapes, tight tolerances, precise density targets, and detailed equipment setups. The operator is expected to work largely independently and make process and quality adjustments based on measurements, specifications, and production results.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate hydraulic, mechanical, robotic, and manual presses.
  • Compact and mold material into complex shapes according to drawings and specifications.
  • Set up molds and determine how setup adjustments affect product density and dimensional characteristics.
  • Weigh required grain or mix according to production specifications.
  • Load material into molds and properly distribute material using required tools and techniques.
  • Operate presses to mold components to specified dimensions and density.
  • Perform first-piece and periodic inspections.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, specification charts, and production documentation.
  • Use precision measuring equipment including:
    • Calipers
    • Vernier gauges
    • Micrometers and related measuring devices
    • Protractors
  • Calculate required density targets for production mixes.
  • Perform density and material-workability testing.
  • Use formulas involving weight, volume, fractions, metric measurements, and conversions.
  • Apply different pressing techniques to adjust material weight, wall thickness, and density.
  • Use Statistical Process Control (SPC) systems to monitor processes and record production data.
  • Enter first-piece inspection and density information into required databases.
  • Make machine and process adjustments based on inspection results.
  • Troubleshoot molding and pressing problems.
  • Adjust and repair tooling when necessary to maintain required dimensional tolerances.
  • Visually inspect molds, materials, and finished products.
  • Make appropriate go/no-go quality decisions during the molding process.
  • Operate multiple machines or processes while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Retrieve and prepare required tooling for production setups.
  • Set material scales to the appropriate weight for required product size and density.
  • Maintain safe, clean, and organized production areas.
  • Follow all required manufacturing safety procedures and PPE requirements.
  • Assist and mentor less-experienced Molders when needed.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience.
  • Previous manufacturing and machine-operation experience.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Strong manufacturing math skills.
  • Ability to work with fractions, decimals, metric measurements, and conversions.
  • Experience using precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, and measuring tapes.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to perform machine setups and adjustments.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment, tooling, or production issues.

Preferred Experience

  • Previous molding or press-operation experience.
  • Previous experience as a Molder, Molding Operator, or Press Operator.
  • Hydraulic press experience.
  • Mechanical press experience.
  • Robotic or computer-controlled press experience.
  • Experience with mold setup and tooling.
  • SPC experience.
  • Density testing or material-mixing experience.
  • Experience manufacturing products to tight dimensional tolerances.
  • Experience performing first-piece inspection.
  • Experience working from complex blueprints and specifications.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

Candidates must be able to:

  • Repetitively lift and/or move up to 50 pounds without assistance.
  • Occasionally handle items weighing more than 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Frequently reach, handle materials, and operate equipment.
  • Occasionally climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Work safely around moving mechanical equipment.
  • Work in an environment that may include heat, fumes, and airborne dust.
  • Wear required PPE, which may include safety shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, respirators, dust masks, and hard hats.
