Job Description:

Provides leadership and medical direction for well newborn care in the hospital setting to advance performance in each of Intermountain Healthcare's Fundamentals of Extraordinary Care. This position is responsible for assisting in the development and setting of standards in safety, quality, patient experience, access, and stewardship in the well newborn nursery and is accountable for the successful implementation of and compliance to those standards.

The Medical Director for Well Newborn Operations is a Canyons region leadership role reporting to the Senior Medical Director of Neonatal Health with accountability for well newborn care across the region and some cross regional collaboration. The Medical Director is responsible for several core areas; 1) Clinical leadership for pediatric and family medicine clinicians/providers (Pediatricians/Family Medicine Providers/APP’s) 2) Management of clinical operations for well newborns 3) Partners with regional obstetric, family medicine, pediatric and neonatology leaders to optimize transitions of care, quality, safety, and operations of newborn care 4) Collaborates with Neonatal Health and hospital operations Leadership to develop system-wide standards for well newborn care 5) Educates newborn (pediatric/family practice) and obstetric providers practicing within the hospital about region-wide well newborn practice standards.


The Medical Director works collaboratively with Neonatology and Newborn leaders across Intermountain Health including Specialty-Based Care (OB/Neo Operations), Community-Based Care, Clinical Programs, Children’s Health, Clinical Services, Office of Patient Experience, Hospital Administrative Leaders, Hospital CMO, Intermountain Medical Group and Select Health.



Job Essentials

Provide medical direction for all well newborn services emphasizing safety, quality, patient experience, access, stewardship, engaged caregivers, and smart growth.
Lead and inspire a culture of continuous improvement, success, collaboration, teamwork and dedication by all team members including physicians, APP's, nurses, technicians and all staff members.
Chairs system-wide newborn executive team leading all pediatric/newborn department chairs in:
o strategic development and growth of newborn care programs and initiatives, focused on a holistic, integrated approach to clinical care
o development and implementation of evidence-based care processes and best-practices, team-based care, including use of APP's to support value and risk-based payment models
o implementation of best practices around staffing, well newborn operations, peer review, and quality improvement.
Lead collaboration between pediatric/newborn department chairs, leadership of hospital operations and OB/Neo Operations to optimize safety and quality and reduce variation in well newborn care in hospitals across the system.
Partner with system leadership in obstetrics, pediatrics, and family medicine to optimize quality and safety of newborn care within the hospital.
Bridge transition of care from newborn to pediatric community-based provider.
Partner with pediatric/newborn department chairs and leadership of hospital operations to ensure that providers are upholding bylaws of hospitals. ?
Participate in regularly scheduled system-wide Neonatology Medical Director and Neonatology Department Meetings.
Communicate and educate local pediatric leadership teams about system-wide initiatives including but not limited to evidence-based care processes.
Lead documentation and coding efforts; physician conversations, education, understanding.
Address performance concerns for providers, including peer review.
Participate in system-wide neonatal/newborn peer review.
Work in concert with hospital administrative leadership to ensure regulatory and safety compliance in clinical activities.
Oversee related research initiatives in collaboration with Office of Research; evaluate most effective processes and treatments and publishes results.
Provide specialty specific review and/or consultation as requested by SelectHealth.
Provide specialty specific consultation as requested by Care Transformation/Information Systems.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Physician: M.D or D.O. with residency training and Board Certification in Pediatrics or Neonatology with training in newborn care. Training that must be obtained through an accredited institution; Education is Verified.
  • Advanced Practice Provider: Doctor of Nursing Practice, Doctor of Nursing Science, Doctor of Medical Science, Doctor of Health Science, or Doctor of Physician Assistant Studies.
  • Practicing in primary care pediatrics or in neonatology
  • Licensed or able to be licensed to practice Medicine in the State of Utah.
  • Certified in Neonatal Resuscitation Program.
  • Holds active privileges or qualified to be credentialed at an Intermountain Hospital and Select Health.
  • Must be able to demonstrate effective leadership skills and the ability to work effectively and collegially with clinical and non-clinical staff to move others to action and model the vision and values of the organization.
  • 3-5 years of clinical experience with progressive leadership experience in pediatrics or newborn care.
  • Exceptional verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Successful medical leadership experience.
Training in clinical quality improvement.
Current experience with neonatal resuscitation.

Interact with others requiring employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience. 

$7.25 - $999.99
