A Brief Overview
Prepares patients to be seen by physician, assist with ophthalmic surgery evaluations including appropriate work up and diagnostic testing along with patient education, assist with surgical procedures to include instrument set up, must be able to administer of topical medications or diagnostic drugs prescribed by physician related to testing and treatment.
What you will do
- Ensures examination rooms are properly stocked, cleaned and that equipment is ready and in working order for daily use. Prepares paperwork/educational materials and medications, replacing outdated medications. Monitors refrigerator temperature for compliance.
- Administers topical medications or diagnostic drugs prescribed by physician for testing or treatment. Assists physician with office surgical procedures and arranges needed instruments for procedures prior to scheduled date.
- Assists with ophthalmic surgery evaluations including appropriate work up, diagnostic testing and patient education.
- Proficiency in ophthalmic diagnostic and treatment equipment including maintenance, weekly calibration, monthly paperwork, and paperwork following procedure, changing gas tanks, ordering supplies.
- Must be able to operate visual acuity monitors, applanation and contact tonometers, pachymeter, visual field testing, lensometer, manual keratometer, OCT, fundus camera and fluorescein angiography, automated refracter/keratometer, topographer/tomagrapher, IOL master, A-scan biometer, potential acuity meter, brightness acuity test, and slit lamp.
- Rooms and prepares patient, obtaining information: ophthalmic, medical, family and social history along with the patient concerns. Performs opening examination tests and prepares equipment for physician as needed.
- Proficient in using electronic health record for all aspects of the ophthalmic evaluation.
- Maintains current knowledge of diagnostic coding and makes certain charges are completed accurately in collaboration with physician.
- Coordinates and manages clinic inventory in each lane. Contacts pharmacy reps when appropriate for refills. Logs sample medications per Avera clinical guidelines.
- Provides support for preparing charts for appointments, files charts and provides backup to areas where cross-trained.

Required Education, License/Certification, or Work Experience:
- High School or GED Equivalent
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant - International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (IJCAHPO) Upon Hire or
- Certified Ophthalmic Technician - International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (IJCAHPO) Upon Hire or
- Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT) - International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (IJCAHPO) Upon Hire
Preferred Education, License/Certification, or Work Experience:
- 1-3 years training in ophthalmic diagnostic and treatment procedures, including basic ophthalmic workup, diagnostic equipment, and ophthalmic surgery
