Position Overview

O’Keefe Media Group is seeking a Communications Director to expand the reach of its reporting, strengthen its public reputation, and communicate its mission and impact to media, supporters, and donors.

This position will lead external communications, media relations, executive messaging, and reputation management while partnering with the donor development team to support fundraising and donor engagement. The ideal candidate is a strategic and exceptional communicator who can operate effectively in a fast-paced news environment and turn OMG’s work into compelling public- and donor-facing narratives.

Key Outcomes

  • Increase awareness, reach, and credibility of OMG’s reporting and mission.
  • Secure meaningful media coverage, interviews, and public appearances.
  • Maintain clear and consistent messaging across public, media, executive, and donor communications.
  • Strengthen fundraising results through persuasive donor communications and impact reporting.
  • Prepare leadership to communicate effectively during interviews, appearances, donor meetings, and public events.
  • Establish effective systems for rapid-response and crisis communications.
  • Measure communications performance and use results to improve future strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute an integrated communications strategy supporting OMG’s editorial, organizational, and fundraising objectives.
  • Translate investigations, accomplishments, and funding priorities into clear and compelling narratives.
  • Draft press releases, public statements, media advisories, talking points, executive communications, donor materials, and impact reports.
  • Build relationships with journalists, producers, podcast hosts, media outlets, and other external stakeholders.
  • Coordinate media outreach for investigations, announcements, events, and executive appearances.
  • Partner with the donor development team on fundraising campaigns, donor updates, cases for support, presentations, and stewardship communications.
  • Prepare James O’Keefe, senior leadership, and development representatives for interviews, speaking engagements, donor meetings, and fundraising events.
  • Monitor media coverage, public sentiment, donor engagement, and reputational risks.
  • Lead crisis communications and rapid-response messaging when necessary.
  • Coordinate communications priorities and calendars across editorial, marketing, events, leadership, and donor development.
  • Track media, audience, donor-engagement, and fundraising results to evaluate and improve communications efforts.

Qualifications

  • Five or more years of experience in communications, public relations, journalism, political communications, nonprofit communications, fundraising communications, or a related field.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, presentation, and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience developing strategic messaging for organizations, executives, or public figures.
  • Strong understanding of media relations, news cycles, and reputation management.
  • Ability to communicate organizational impact effectively to public and donor audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage competing priorities under tight deadlines.
  • Sound judgment and discretion when handling sensitive or confidential information.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in investigative journalism, independent media, advocacy, public affairs, nonprofit development, or donor relations.
  • Experience creating fundraising campaigns, donor-impact reports, stewardship communications, or major-donor materials.
  • Established relationships with journalists, producers, podcast hosts, or media outlets.
  • Experience supporting high-profile, public-facing executives.
  • Familiarity with communications, donor-engagement, and fundraising performance metrics.
  • Passion for investigative journalism, citizen journalism, and independent media.
