Position Summary
Our client’s Plant Systems Engineering team designs and integrates the Balance of Site (BOS) systems for a power plant that uses the client’s Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). As a Mechanical Engineer on this team, you will write design requirements for BOS mechanical systems. You will also oversee and technically support the client’s design partners as they develop system designs for projects. You will work closely with internal and external teams from several disciplines to solve design problems, and you will plan and carry out work that supports the project scope.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Help develop design requirements and integrate BOS system designs into the overall plant architecture.
- Provide technical oversight and support to the client’s design partners as they develop BOS system designs for projects.
- Prepare and review technical documents for project work.
- Plan, organize, and complete complex assignments as part of a team.
- Work with internal and external stakeholders to coordinate design activities and resolve technical problems.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Core Competencies
- Problem solving: Finds and resolves problems on time, and gathers and reviews information appropriately. Uses own judgment and works independently, and asks team members for input on complex or sensitive situations.
- Oral/written communication: Listens carefully and speaks clearly and professionally. Edits work for accuracy and clarity. Can write, read, and interpret complex technical information.
- Planning/organizing: Prioritizes and plans work, tracks personal and project timelines and deadlines, and uses time efficiently.
- Adaptability: Adapts to changes, manages competing demands, and handles interruptions, delays, and unexpected events.
- Dependability: Is consistently on time, responds to management expectations, and asks for feedback to improve.
- Team building: Builds strong working relationships and trust across the organization.

- Quality assurance: Understands and applies the quality assurance requirements of 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, 10 CFR 21, and NQA-1.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering or technical discipline from a four-year accredited college or university. An active PE license in a relevant discipline is a plus.
- Experience: At least 5 years of relevant full-time professional experience, or at least 3 years with an advanced degree.
- Eligibility: Must be eligible to work under Department of Energy 10 CFR Part 810.
Preferred Knowledge and Experience
- Design and operation of balance of plant process and fluid systems, such as HVAC, radioactive waste, feedwater, main steam, and water systems.
- Mechanical components such as pumps, valves, heat exchangers, steam turbines, condensers, and piping, ideally at a nuclear power plant or another industrial facility.
- Thermal-fluid systems, hydraulic analyses, and heat balance models.
- NRC regulations and guidelines for nuclear, radioactive waste, and balance of plant systems.
- Industry codes, standards, and guidelines such as ASME BPVC and EPRI.
- Preparing and reviewing engineering deliverables, including:
- P&IDs and process flow diagrams
- Hydraulic and equipment sizing calculations
- Design and equipment specifications
- Engineering reports and studies
- Reviewing and managing engineering deliverables from contractors, suppliers, and consultants.
