Summary
- Evaluates engineering models and drawings for completeness of design, adherence to all documentation requirements, proper dimensioning techniques, fit checks, and tolerance analyses to ensure items can be fabricated and assembled as designed.
- Designer has knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the mechanical engineering field as it relates to assembly systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Interface regularly with other design personnel to understand the component design intent, fit/function, and manufacturing/assembly considerations.
- Create and check part and assembly drawings thoroughly with appropriate GD&T callouts, part feature tolerances, surface finish requirements, material specifications, heat treatment, test specifications, inspection requirements and manufacturing feasibility.
- Check 3D CAD within the master assembly to verify a components fit/function and ensure appropriate clearances have been maintained with neighboring components.
- Ensure that the redline drawing mark-ups are implemented by design engineers prior to drawing release.
- Perform or assist in critical stack-up calculations as required considering tolerance variations within the stack-up path.
- Sign-off final part and assembly drawings to release for manufacturing.
- Guide design personnel on GD&T, manufacturing considerations in design and inspection methods.
- Use technical expertise to generate creative and innovative solutions overcoming design obstacles.
- Participate in CAD design review meetings to identify and communicate any component interface issues.
- Interface with internal manufacturing personnel and component suppliers to understand different manufacturing processes and limitations.
- Confer with customers to review schematics and answer questions pertaining to installation of systems.
- Confirm drawing illustration matches bills of materials as well as material lists
Education and/or Experience
- Associates Degree in Computer Drafting Program and/or 5 years or more experience with assembly and/or machine design and/or checking.
- Proficient with recent software such as Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems: CAD software such as NX, Catia and FIDES.
- Must have a solid understanding of manufacturing processes, ASME standards including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and Drawing Standards for level II and level III Technical Data Packages (TDP's) Experience with SolidWorks CAD software and SolidWorks PDM for components and assemblies. Other CAD software and/or PDM experience will be evaluated.
