What to Expect
As a Geartrain Design and Analysis Engineer, you will develop models and design/analysis workflows for geartrain components and systems to improve their durability, efficiency, noise performance, cost, and power density. This role requires a passionate, collaborative, detail-oriented, and tenacious engineer who applies geartrain expertise and first-principles physics to solve difficult technical problems. You will model, analyze, develop, test, and set requirements for high-performance drive units in Tesla’s powertrains.
What You’ll Do
- Design and analyze geartrain components, including rotating shafts, gears, differentials, torque-splitting devices, and clutchesÂ
- Develop component- and system-level models to predict geartrain durability, efficiency, noise, mass, and cost, and use those results to inform design trade-offs and decisionsÂ
- Create, develop, and execute component- and system-level tests to validate geartrain designs and calibrate modelsÂ
- Use geartrain models and analysis to troubleshoot durability, efficiency, or noise issues identified in drive unit validation testingÂ
- Incorporate fleet data into models to assess drive unit performance and identify opportunities for design improvementsÂ
- Implement parametric models in Tesla’s proprietary powertrain cloud simulation tool to inform powertrain architecture decisions for new programsÂ
- Build and apply AI-enabled workflows to improve model development, automation, and analysis throughputÂ
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams across vehicle modeling, design, manufacturing, and supply chain to deliver and launch optimized drive system designs using data-driven analysisÂ
What You’ll Bring
- First-principles physics understanding of engineering disciplines associated with geartrain durability, efficiency, noise, and vibrationÂ
- Working knowledge of geartrain design and analysis tools like LDP, KISSsoft, Romax, Transmission3D, or equivalent (experience preferred)Â
- Experience with Matlab, Python, or equivalent programming languageÂ
- Familiarity with CAE analysis software packages like Ansys, Abaqus, or HyperworkÂ
- Experience in 3D modeling within a product development environment; CATIA preferredÂ
- Experience in rotating machinery design, analysis, testing, or failure analysisÂ
- Knowledge of gears, bearings, differentials, actuators, clutches, axle disconnect systems, or multi-speed transmissions (design/analysis experience preferred)Â
- Experience using AI-assisted workflows to accelerate modeling, automation, and analysis (preferred)Â
