MDU Fiber Construction Inspector (OSP/FTTH)
Position Overview
Every build we take on ends with a community connected to a fiber network it will rely on for years. As a Multi-Dwelling Unit (MDU) Fiber Construction Inspector, you make sure it gets built right. You'll oversee subcontractor crews on MDU and fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) projects, covering outside plant (OSP) work and inside wiring, from pre-construction walkouts through closeout, holding their work to the drawings and client standards.
You'll work on your own, without a supervisor on site. Expect to walk routes, track subcontractor production, catch problems before they become change orders, and document it all. The work moves between active construction zones and the inside of apartment and condo buildings, in all weather. Days typically run 7 to 5, with evenings and weekends when a project calls for it. There's room to grow from this role within Telecon.
This role fits someone who has already done quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) inspection and overseen subcontractor crews on fiber, telecom, or utility work. You read construction drawings, route maps, utility prints, and as-builts with confidence, and you know when work has drifted outside the scope of work. You stay organized across several jobs and can tell a subcontractor to redo work without damaging the relationship. If you want to be the reason a job closes out clean, this is that role.
Quick Facts
- Location: Candidate can be based out of Western Washington, with job sites ranging from Bellingham to Olympia.
- Wage: $36.00 β $40.00 per hour, with potential for overtime
- Shift/Schedule: Monday through Friday, typically 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a couple of evenings a week until 8 or 9 p.m. and about one weekend a month
Responsibilities
- Oversee and inspect subcontractor work on MDU, FTTH, and fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) projects, including drilling, conduit and fiber placement, and splicing, from pre-construction planning through final closeout.
- Manage relationships with all project stakeholders, including clients, municipalities, property managers, permit holders, and plant owners, and stay in contact with state, county, and city agencies about planned or overlapping projects.
- Lead pre-construction walkouts and meetings, review upcoming projects for roadblocks, and confirm locates are clear and property owner and city requirements are met before crews start.
- Manage crew schedules, including where crews start and when each job is expected to finish, and make sure subcontractors have what they need to keep working.
- Review construction drawings and specifications for constructability and compliance, and make sure field work matches the approved design.
- Perform QA/QC inspections of workmanship, materials, and progress, and keep accurate inspection reports and construction documentation.
- Track and report daily production and materials to the client, including conduit and fiber placement quantities.
- Update as-builts daily.
- Identify and report discrepancies in methods, materials, or scope, and work with Project Managers to resolve field issues.
- Identify, quote, and submit change requests for work beyond standard scope, and get approval before that work proceeds.
- Coordinate hard surface restoration with subcontractors, including scheduling and walking it with inspectors.
- Close out projects by walking them with stakeholders, completing a final quality control inspection, and confirming every change request has been submitted and approved.
- Enforce safety policies, client standards, and regulatory requirements on every site.
Required Qualifications
- Experience performing QA/QC inspections on fiber, telecom, or utility construction.
- Experience directing or overseeing subcontractor crews.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, fiber route maps, utility prints, and as-built documentation.
- Working knowledge of aerial and underground placement methods, National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) guidelines, OSP construction standards, and permitting requirements.
- Ability to identify change orders by reading a scope of work (SOW), knowing what the contract covers, and flagging out-of-scope work (such as a deeper bore than specified) for approval.
- Comfort using field reporting software on a phone or laptop, plus Microsoft Office.
- Professional communication skills and the judgment to make sound field decisions without constant supervision.
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to project sites across a wide geographic area.
- Availability for extended days, evenings, and occasional weekends as construction schedules require.
Preferred Qualifications
- Understanding of fiber optic construction methods, MDU installation standards, and structured cabling practices.
- Familiarity with optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) test results and fiber testing documentation.
- Experience with geographic information system (GIS) mapping tools.
This position requires successful completion of a background check and motor vehicle record (MVR) review, as applicable.
Physical Requirements
This role requires the ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including walking 2 to 5 miles a day through neighborhoods and job sites and moving between outdoor work areas and the inside of multi-unit buildings. Employees must be able to safely lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this role.
Work Environment
This role is performed both outdoors on active construction sites and inside multi-dwelling unit buildings, with regular exposure to weather and active construction zones. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this role.
