Materials & Sewing Specialist, Part-Time Consultant
Canton, Massachusetts | 8–16 Hours Per Week | Approximately $50/Hour
The Judge Rotenberg Educational Center (JRC) is seeking a skilled Materials & Sewing Specialist to work with our Electronics Department on a part-time consulting basis.
This is a unique opportunity for an experienced seamstress, tailor, sewing professional, or materials specialist who enjoys using their skills to create customized products and develop practical solutions for specialized needs.
What You’ll Do
The consultant will work approximately 8–16 hours per week and will assist with:
- Design and construct specialized materials and equipment based on individual patient needs and specifications
- Sew, alter, repair, reinforce, and modify existing protective materials and equipment.
- Take measurements and make appropriate adjustments to ensure proper fit, function, comfort, and durability
- Select appropriate fabrics, fasteners, padding, webbing, thread, hardware, and other materials based on the intended use
- Develop prototypes and collaborate with clinical and support staff to evaluate and refine designs.
- Working from existing designs, samples, measurements, and specifications
- Modifying existing products to improve fit, durability, functionality, or ease of use
- Collaborating with members of the Electronics Department and other JRC staff on customized projects
- Performing repairs and modifications to existing materials and equipment as needed
What We’re Looking For
We are open to candidates from a variety of backgrounds. You may be a good fit if you have experience as a:
- Seamstress or tailor
- Industrial or production sewing professional
- Upholstery specialist
- Costume or garment maker
- Fabricator or materials specialist
- Adaptive equipment or medical-product sewing professional
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have:
- Strong sewing and fabrication skills
- Experience working with a variety of fabrics and materials
- Ability to work from measurements, patterns, samples, or specifications
- Strong attention to detail and craftsmanship
- Creative problem-solving skills and an interest in developing customized solutions
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team
Experience creating specialized, adaptive, healthcare, safety, or durable fabric products is helpful but not required.
