Marine Certification Engineer
Aversan Inc. (www.aversan.com) is a trusted multi-service engineering and electronics manufacturing company. Aversan delivers leading-edge and reliable safety-critical electronics and software systems to the aerospace, defence, and space industries.

We are currently seeking a qualified Certification Officer to join our team. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in naval ship classification rules and regulations, with a strong background in marine surveying or vessel maintenance. They should also possess excellent communication skills to effectively liaise between various parties involved in certification processes.

Responsibilities

  • Manage certification activities for Royal Canadian Navy Arctic and Offshore Patrol Vessels (AOPV), Joint Support Ships (JSS), and Minor Warships and Auxiliary Vessels (MWAV).
  • Identify and track certification and recertification requirements, including Classification Society surveys, inspections, and material certificate renewals.
  • Develop and improve certification management processes, certificate renewal procedures, and tracking systems.
  • Coordinate scheduled, periodic, and annual Classification Society surveys and inspections with surveyors, ship staff, and Service Delivery teams.
  • Maintain certification issue trackers and certification deliverable lists, ensuring vessel certification records remain accurate and up to date.
  • Liaise with Classification Society representatives to resolve technical issues, certification deficiencies, Conditions of Class, and engineering changes affecting vessel classification.
  • Assess the certification impact of vessel defects, planned and corrective maintenance activities, and proposed engineering changes.
  • Participate in technical risk assessments associated with Conditions of Class and coordinate appropriate mitigation and resolution activities.
  • Review the Captain’s Ship Book and ensure vessel certificates remain valid, current, and aligned with the ship’s Technical Data Package.
  • Advise Engineering and Service Delivery teams on classification rules, certification requirements, and regulatory compliance matters.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for certification-related inquiries, coordinating communication between the Department of National Defence (DND), Naval Materiel Regulatory Authority (NMRA), Formation Technical Authority (FTA), Maritime Equipment Program Management (MEPM), Classification Societies, and internal teams.
  • Support vessel inspections and certification activities at offices, dockyards, and onboard naval ships, including travel across Canada as required.
 

Basic Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Classification Society rules and regulations, particularly those of Lloyd’s Register, American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), and DNV.
  • Understanding of ship classification requirements, including Naval Ship Classification Rules and Commercial Ship Rules.
  • Familiarity with the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), International Maritime Organization (IMO), International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), and International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (Polar Code).
  • Relevant experience in marine surveying, vessel certification, ship maintenance, or quality assurance involving classification standards.
  • Strong communication, coordination, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills, with the ability to manage certification records, track deliverables, and coordinate multiple activities.
  • Proficiency in English, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work in a hybrid environment, including office, dockyard, and onboard naval vessel activities in Halifax.
  • Willingness to travel within Canada as required.
  • Ability and willingness to perform onboard inspections involving bending, twisting, working at heights, and entering confined spaces, with training provided.
  • Must hold an acceptable current security clearance: NATO Secret, Controlled Goods Program (CGP), or Trade clearance. The current clearance level must be clearly stated on the resume.
