Job Overview
The Painter / Blaster is a specialized position responsible for abrasive surface preparation, the application of complex industrial coatings, and departmental material handling. Operating in this role requires technicians to continuously rotate between abrasive blasting in supplied-air suits, applying highly customized fireproof coatings, and executing heavy industrial logistics.
Job Responsibilities
- Rotate continuously between abrasive blasting, industrial painting, and material handling operations to support full cross-functional departmental coverage and maintain production flow.
- Execute dynamic material handling duties, utilizing forklifts and heavy rigging to safely load, unload, and transport large-scale raw materials and finished products across the interior and exterior of the facility.
- Navigate physical demands by continuously bending, twisting, kneeling, and contorting around complex actuator geometries to apply precise coatings to difficult-to-reach angles and undersides.
- Calculate exact chemical mix ratios and perform critical mathematical conversions between wet mils and dry mils to ensure precise coating thicknesses.
- Test, measure, and immediately correct coating thicknesses (mils) in real-time to ensure strict adherence to unlimited custom customer specifications and prevent costly rework.
- Operate safely in personal protective equipment, including heavy full-body blast suits with supplied breathing air and specialized paint suits with filtered respirators.
- Apply a limitless variety of complex industrial chemicals and fireproof coatings, exceeding the scope of standard repetitive automotive or basic industrial painting.
- Manage departmental logistics based on production routing schedules, ensuring materials are stacked securely in designated bays and chip containers are emptied into correct hoppers.
- Perform daily safety and maintenance inspections on powered industrial trucks, paint booth components, blast cabinets, chains, slings, and hooks.
- Engage directly with third-party chemical representatives and specialized training programs to continually master the curing times, application techniques, and environmental requirements of new chemical systems.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Mandatory successful completion of a medical clearance examination and fit-testing to legally and safely operate in supplied-air systems and tight-fitting respirators.
- Ability to endure extreme physical demands, including working at elevated levels up to 15 ft, lifting up to 50 lbs regularly and 100 lbs intermittently, and sustaining prolonged periods of ground-level work requiring knee pads.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience applying heavy industrial (not automotive) specialized coatings, such as fireproofing, epoxies, or custom chemical applications.
- Advanced knowledge of abrasive blasting techniques, surface profile preparations, and corresponding quality standards.
- Experience working in a high-throughput manufacturing bottleneck environment where output directly dictates site shipment metrics.
