Specifically, the SEM functional area is able to provide critical structure measurements and assist in troubleshooting process failures causing manufacturing defects.
Preferred Industry Background: Chemistry, electrical engineering, materials science, microscopy
Reason for the Opening: Filling a vacant position left by converted contractor
Job Description: This role supports semiconductor manufacturing, process verification, and defect analysis through high-quality scanning electron microscope (SEM) imagery and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The successful candidate will independently manage routine analytical work, respond to production priorities, contribute to continuous improvement efforts, and work with engineers to help identify root causes and ensure product quality.
Day to Day Responsibilities:
• Prepare samples for SEM analysis using established laboratory practices and techniques.
• Operate Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Focused Ion Beam (FIB) instruments to produce high-quality images and measurements of semiconductor devices, films, structures, and defects.
• Communicate with engineers to review analysis requests and understand characterization requirements, prioritizing urgent manufacturing requests while maintaining quality standards and turnaround expectations.
• Perform and document routine preventive maintenance, tool qualifications, and troubleshooting activities.
• Collaborate with team members across shifts to ensure thorough handoff of work, equipment status, and ongoing activities.
Required Technical Skills: (listed in order of importance)
• Ability to learn and follow detailed technical procedures with accurate, consistent results.
• Commitment to safe work practices.
• Aptitude for precise, careful sample handling and instrument operation.
• Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and the ability to learn and use laboratory software systems.
Bonus/Preferred Skills:
• Experience working in an analytical laboratory environment.
• Hands-on experience operating scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Focused Ion Beam (FIB) instruments.
• Experience with EDS acquisition and qualitative elemental interpretation.
• Experience analyzing semiconductor structures, thin films, particles, cracks, voids, contamination, or other defects.
• Familiarity with semiconductor fabrication processes and structured problem-solving methods.
Soft Skills: Clear, professional written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and collaborate effectively. Must be reliable, with a strong sense of ownership and accountability. Exceptional attention to detail.
Education/Certifications:
Associate degree or higher in a related technical field; equivalent relevant semiconductor laboratory experience may be considered.
Bachelor’s degree in materials science, chemistry, physics, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, or a related discipline preferred.
No Certifications required, Six Sigma Yellow/Green belt is a plus.
Years of Experience:
Level 2: 5-10 years' experience
Interview Process: Candidates will have a short phone screen with the hiring manager. The top 2-3 candidates will be invited onsite for an in person interview with the hiring manager, the lab engineer, and lead SEM analyst.
