The Manager of Infrastructure provides leadership for the technology infrastructure that supports the academic, administrative, and research missions of our client institution, St. Lawrence University. Reporting to the CampusWorks Chief Information Officer, this position leads and supervises the campus infrastructure team, contributes deep technical skill to infrastructure administration and is responsible for delivering secure, reliable, resilient, and cost-effective infrastructure services. 

The Manager works with the Infrastructure Center of Excellence (CoE) to develop infrastructure strategies, oversees daily operations, manages critical technology initiatives, and ensures the availability and performance of enterprise systems, networks, servers, cloud technologies, and data center facilities. The role partners closely with university leadership, faculty, staff, vendors, and CampusWorks Centers of Excellence to continuously improve technology services while maintaining a strong focus on customer service, operational excellence, and institutional priorities.

Essential Job Duties:

    Infrastructure Management

     

    • Ensure the delivery of secure, reliable, and cost-effective infrastructure services.
    • Coordinate with the Infrastructure CoE to  execute infrastructure lifecycle strategies that support the University's strategic plan, technology roadmap, and ongoing evaluation of emerging technologies and cloud services.
      • Technical administration responsibility for campus Windows and Linux servers, storage, virtualization platforms, networking, identity services, backup systems, or other core infrastructure technologies. 
      • Utilize monitoring tools (e.g., Connectwise, SolarWinds, Nagios, Whatsup Gold, Zabbix) to oversee network health, optimize bandwidth usage, and detect anomalies. Set up proactive alerts and automated incident response protocols.
      • Leverage data analytics to evaluate performance metrics, identify areas of improvement, and implement solutions that enhance system uptime and user experience.
      • Conduct regular system updates, patching, and performance tuning of Windows and Linux servers to ensure reliability, compliance, and security.
      • Coordinate operation and maintenance of campus data center facilities and supporting infrastructure.
      • Coordinate with the Infrastructure CoE to establish and maintain infrastructure standards, documentation, operational procedures, and technical governance to improve consistency, efficiency, automation, and service delivery.

        Incident and Operational Leadership

      • Serve as the on-site incident liaison during major outages and critical incidents, coordinating direction from the CoE with internal teams and vendors to ensure rapid triage, resource mobilization, and service restoration.
      • Extablish and maintain a culture of urgency, ownership, accountability, and disciplined execution while demonstrating end-to-end ownership of operational responsibilities and major initiatives.
      • Communicate timely, accurate, and meaningful updates translating technical issues into operational impact assessments.

        Campus Partnership

         

      • Partner with campus leaders to understand technology needs and advocate for CoE recommended infrastructure solutions aligned with institutional priorities. 
      • Collaborate with relevant campus departments and project teams to ensure construction and renovation projects appropriately incorporate technology infrastructure.
      • Build productive relationships with faculty, staff, and campus stakeholders through regular engagement, responsive service, and participation in campus committees and planning initiatives.
        • Work closely with CampusWorks Centers of Excellence to leverage enterprise expertise, standards, and best practices.

          Vendor and Financial Management

        • Evaluate, recommend, and manage vendors and third-party service providers, ensuring contractual obligations, service expectations, and performance standards are achieved.
        • Oversee infrastructure licensing, maintenance agreements, warranties, and service contracts to support reliable and cost-effective operations.
        • Assist with management of infrastructure operating and capital budgets developed in partnership with the CoE, monitor expenditures, and partner with the CoE to recommend investments that enhance reliability, security, and service value.
        • Leadership and Staff Development

        • Manage a high-performing infrastructure team committed to continuous improvement, accountability, innovation, and teamwork.
        • Foster a collaborative, customer-focused, and service-oriented culture. 
        • Conduct performance evaluations, establish goals, provide ongoing coaching and feedback, and recommend professional development opportunities.
        • Identify succession plan opportunities and cross-training strategies that strengthen organizational resilience. 
        • Establish workload management practices that appropriately prioritize operational work, projects, and strategic initiatives. 
        • Serve as an advocate for the infrastructure team while maintaining alignment with institutional priorities.

          Security and Risk Management

          • Partner with the CampusWorks Information Security Center of Excellence to maintain secure infrastructure operations. 
          • Ensure infrastructure services comply with cybersecurity standards, institutional policies, and regulatory requirements. 
          • With direction from the CampusWorks Infrastructure CoE to oversee backup, recovery, continuity, monitoring, and alerting capabilities to maximize service availability.

            Supervisory Responsibilities

             

            Directly supervises: 

            • Systems Administrator(s) 
            • Network Administrator(s) 
            • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with CampusWorks policies and applicable laws, including hiring recommendations, onboarding, coaching, performance management, disciplinary actions, employee development, scheduling, and succession planning. 

Required Skills & Abilities:

  • Senior-level large scale Windows Server, Linux and/or network administration
  • Experience with systems and network performance and monitoring tools
  • Demonstrated experience managing technical teams. 
  • Strong technical leadership during high-pressure incidents. 
  • Well-developed organizational and time-management skills. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement, operational excellence, collaboration, accountability, and innovation.

Minimum Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
    • Five years of progressively responsible infrastructure administration experience. 
    • Extensive experience implementing and supporting enterprise networking, servers, virtualization, or cloud technologies.
    • Experience managing technology vendors, contracts, and budgets. 

Preferred Qualifications:

    • Prior supervisory or management experience leading technical teams. 
    • Experience supporting higher education institutions. 
    • Experience leading incident response and operational problem resolution.
    • Experience working in a managed services environment. 
    • Experience with IT service management frameworks such as ITIL. 
    • Experience leading infrastructure modernization initiatives. 
    • Relevant industry certifications such as ITIL, Microsoft, VMware, Cisco, or AWS. 
The estimated base salary range for this job is $75,000-$90,000/year.  The range represents a good faith estimate of the range that CampusWorks reasonably expects to pay for this job at the time of the job posting. The actual salary paid to an individual will vary based on multiple factors, including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; required travel; and other business, contractual, and organizational needs.   This job is also eligible to participate in CampusWorks’ annual profit-sharing program, which reflects CampusWorks’ pay for performance philosophy.  The job is also eligible to participate in CampusWorks’ generous benefit offerings, which include medical, dental and vision coverage, 401k retirement plan, and other health and wellness plans.  The salary range information provided is in accordance with applicable state and local laws regarding salary transparency that are currently in effect and may be implemented in the future.
