Lead Application Engineer — Commercial & Origination

The client is a major European energy company active in power and gas markets across 10+ European countries. Its application estate spans ~440 IT-led applications — from front-to-back trading and risk platforms to market-facing scheduling, settlement and energy data systems — plus a large business-built application landscape.

The project consolidates the client's application services under a single managed services partner, covering both production operations (Run) and change delivery (Build) across six application areas, with delivery anchored in Switzerland, Spain and India.

You will join the commercial and origination systems team, supporting customer-facing sales, origination and contract pricing applications — a mixed estate of roughly 58% custom code and 42% SaaS. The team works in agile squads with a nearshore delivery core and senior functional staff on the client site in Switzerland.

You are the senior technical lead for the commercial and origination application portfolio, based on the client site. You define application architecture for the portfolio, lead both the Build and Run teams working on it, and hold the senior stakeholder relationships that keep technical direction and commercial direction aligned.

Responsibilities

• Act as senior technical authority for the commercial and origination application portfolio
• Develop and govern application architecture and technology choices within the portfolio, aligned with the client's design principles and high-level requirements
• Lead the Build and Run teams working on the portfolio: priorities, quality, capacity, and escalation
• Own senior stakeholder relationships with client IT and commercial leadership
• Provide technical governance — design reviews, standards adherence, and technical debt management
• Support business-case development for portfolio investments with effort, risk, and option analysis
• Serve as escalation owner for high-impact incidents and delivery risks in the portfolio

Requirements

• 10+ years of application engineering or architecture experience
• Energy industry application background strongly required
• Proven leadership of combined Build and Run teams
• Expertise in application and integration architecture; cloud (AWS) and modern web/backend stacks
• Senior stakeholder management and technical governance in an outsourced delivery model
• Switzerland-based profile essential
• Education: Bachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
• Language: Fluent English required; French and/or German strongly preferred
