Facilities Coordinator/Bus Driver

The Role. Heartwood Community School is seeking a dependable, hands-onFacilities Coordinator/Bus Driver to help ensure our school is clean, safe, welcoming, and ready for students, staff, and families each day.

TheFacilities Coordinator/Bus Driver is primarily responsible for the daily cleanliness and upkeep of the school, including classrooms, restrooms, common areas, dining spaces, offices, and outdoor areas. This position also performs light maintenance and repairs, supports school events and facility needs, and provides student transportation as needed.

The ideal candidate takes pride in their work, has a strong eye for detail, responds proactively to the needs of the school community, and is willing to jump in wherever needed. This is a highly hands-on position that requires someone who can balance custodial responsibilities, basic facility maintenance, and safe, reliable student transportation.

The selected candidate must hold and maintain aSouth Carolina Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the appropriate school bus and passenger endorsements. Heartwood Community School will provide support for the required CDL training and certification process.

Responsibilities:

Custodial Services & School Cleanliness

• Maintain high standards of cleanliness throughout classrooms, restrooms, offices, dining areas, common spaces, and other school facilities.
• Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, disinfect, and perform other routine custodial duties.
• Clean and sanitize high-touch surfaces and areas as needed.
• Empty and properly dispose of trash and recycling.
• Restock restroom, custodial, and facility supplies.
• Respond promptly to spills, accidents, and other urgent cleaning needs.
• Perform deep cleaning and other periodic custodial tasks during school breaks and summer.
• Maintain the cleanliness and appearance of outdoor areas, playgrounds, walkways, and other school grounds.
• Operate and properly maintain vacuums, floor equipment, carpet extractors, pressure washers, and other custodial equipment.
• Ensure custodial equipment, tools, and supplies are properly cleaned, maintained, and stored.
• Follow established cleaning schedules, procedures, and school cleanliness standards.

Light Maintenance & Facility Support

• Perform basic maintenance and repairs, including changing light bulbs, assembling furniture, touch-up painting, tightening hardware, replacing minor fixtures, and addressing other basic facility concerns.
• Conduct routine walkthroughs of the building and grounds to identify cleanliness, maintenance, safety, or facility concerns.
• Report larger or specialized maintenance needs to the Facilities Manager.
• Assist with vendors and contractors by coordinating access to the building and supporting facility-related work as needed.
• Assist with furniture and equipment movement and setup.
• Maintain an organized inventory of custodial, maintenance, and facility supplies.
• Monitor supply levels and communicate purchasing needs to the Facilities Manager.
• Follow all applicable safety procedures when using cleaning chemicals, tools, equipment, and other materials.
• Maintain required safety data sheets and follow proper chemical storage and handling procedures.

Bus Driving & Student Transportation

• Safely transport students to and from school, field trips, athletic events, and other school activities.
• Hold and maintain a South Carolina CDL with applicable school bus and passenger endorsements 
• Complete all required training, testing, certifications, and background requirements associated with school bus operation.
• Complete required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
• Follow all applicable South Carolina school bus, student transportation, and safety requirements.
• Maintain a safe, orderly, and positive environment for students while operating the bus.
• Complete required transportation documentation.
• Communicate vehicle maintenance, safety, student, or transportation concerns promptly.
• Maintain the cleanliness and general appearance of the school bus.
• Assist with fueling and other basic bus upkeep as assigned.

School & Event Support

• Prepare facilities and spaces for school events, meetings, performances, family events, and other activities.
• Assist with room setups, furniture and equipment movement, breakdown, and post-event cleanup.
• Ensure facilities are clean, organized, and ready for daily school operations.
• Respond to immediate operational needs that arise during the school day.
• Work collaboratively with faculty and staff to support a safe, clean, and welcoming school environment.
• Support other school operations and facilities needs as assigned.

Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Previous experience in custodial services, school operations, facilities support, maintenance, transportation, or a related field preferred.
• Experience operating custodial equipment and basic hand tools preferred.
• Previous school bus driving experience is preferred but not required.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
• Must be able and willing to obtain aSouth Carolina CDL with applicable school bus and passenger endorsements within the first 90 days of employment.
• Must successfully complete all required school bus driver training, testing, and certifications.

Physical Requirements. This position is active and hands-on and requires the ability to:

• Stand and walk for extended periods.
• Bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb stairs.
• Lift, carry, push, and pull custodial supplies, equipment, furniture, and other materials.
• Operate custodial equipment and basic maintenance tools.
• Work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Perform cleaning and maintenance tasks requiring repetitive movement.
• Safely enter, exit, and operate a school bus.
• Meet the physical requirements associated with South Carolina school bus driver certification.

Compensation. 

• We are seeking 1 FTE (full-time equivalent) individuals for this role.
• The full-time salary for this role is $80,000.
