Senior Controls and Calibration Technician

Serán is seeking a Senior Controls & Calibration Technician to serve as the site subject matter expert (SME) for instrumentation, control systems, and low-voltage electrical systems supporting pharmaceutical development, laboratory operations, manufacturing processes, facility utilities, and future site expansions.

This position is responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of process instrumentation, control panels, PLC-based systems, facility automation platforms, and low-voltage electrical systems. The role acts as the technical lead for instrumentation standards, and control panel design while ensuring compliance with GMP requirements and engineering best practices.

The Senior Controls & Calibration Technician partners with Engineering, Manufacturing, Facilities, Quality, Validation, and external integrators to develop scalable automation solutions that improve reliability, operational efficiency, and future manufacturing capacity.

Duties & Responsibilities

Controls, Automation & Electrical Systems Leadership

• • Serves as the site technical lead for instrumentation, controls, and low-voltage electrical systems
  • Develops and maintains site instrumentation specifications
  • Establishes and drives the long-term control maintenance strategies for manufacturing, laboratories, utilities, and facility equipment
  • Reviews and approves control system instrumentation and control panel designs developed by equipment vendors, system integrators, and engineering firms
  • Partners with engineering teams to ensure scalable and maintainable automation solutions are implemented across the site

  Control Panel Design & Electrical Systems

  • • Leads the review, and modification of control panels and low-voltage electrical systems supporting manufacturing and utility operations
    • Assist in the development and review of the following implementations:
    • • Control panel layouts
      • Field instrument specifications Wiring diagrams
      • Electrical schematics
      • I/O schedules
      • Device and panel specifications
      • Supports the construction, modification, testing, and commissioning of control panels
      • Performs troubleshooting and maintenance of low-voltage electrical systems up to 480VAC and associated control circuits
      • Coordinates with licensed electricians, contractors, and engineering firms on electrical installations and upgrades
      • Ensures compliance with applicable electrical codes, safety standards, and company engineering practices
      • Provides technical oversight of field wiring, instrumentation installation, panel fabrication, and control system integration activities

      Instrumentation & Calibration Program Ownership

      • • Owns and continuously improves the site's calibration program
        • Defines calibration methodologies, standards, frequencies, and criticality-based maintenance strategies
        • Serve as SME for:
        • • Pressure instrumentation
          • Temperature instrumentation
          • Flow measurement systems
          • Humidity and environmental sensors
          • Load cells and weighing systems
          • Process analytical instrumentation
          • HVAC monitoring systems
          • Utility instrumentation
          • Leads troubleshooting and impact assessments for out-of-tolerance calibration events
          • Reviews and approves calibration procedures, work instructions, and technical documentation

          PLC, HMI & Automation Systems

          • • Supports field troubleshooting on PLC platforms such as:
            • • Allen-Bradley / Rockwell Automation
              • Siemens
              • Ignition
              • FactoryTalk
              • Building Management Systems

              Engineering & Capital Project Leadership

              • • Acts as Controls and Instrumentation Lead on facility expansion and capital projects
                • Supports project development from concept through commissioning and startup
                • Reviews and approves:
                • • P&IDs
                  • Equipment specifications
                  • Instrument data sheets
                  • Power requirements
                  • Automation architecture
                  • Functional design specifications
                  • Participates in FATs, SATs, commissioning, qualification, and validation activities
                  • Coordinates contractors, system integrators, and equipment suppliers throughout project execution
                  • • Responsibilities may increase in scope to align with company initiatives

  • • Proven ability to navigate the following systems: Control panel design, Low-voltage electrical distribution systems, Electrical troubleshooting, PLC programming and diagnostics, SCADA and HMI architecture, Industrial networking, and HVAC controls
    • Design and implementation of the following applications: Process automation strategy, Equipment commissioning and startup, Reliability-centered maintenance, pharmaceutical utility systems, GMP manufacturing systems
    • • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work in cross-functional teams
      • Accepts feedback from a variety of sources and constructively manages conflict
      • Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate
      • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment 
      • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software 

Education & Experience

• • Bachelor’s or technical degree in engineering, automation, or applicable mechanical discipline preferred
  • Requires a minimum of 5 years’ experience within a federally regulated industry

   

  Preference given to candidates with the following:

   

  • • ISA Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST)
    • • UL 508 Technician Certification
      • Certified Calibration Technician (CCT)
      • Electrical License or Limited Maintenance Electrician experience preferred
      • Experience designing control panels and industrial automation systems
      • Experience supporting pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities and GMP environments
      • Experience with capital project execution and commissioning
      • Familiarity with NFPA 70, NFPA 79, ISA standards, and GMP requirements

• • Prolonged periods of sitting or standing at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
