Commercial & Disputes Legal Counsel

How will you add value to the OpenPayd journey?

• • Advise teams across the Group on customer- and supplier-side commercial arrangements, contractual risk and practical day-to-day legal questions.
  • Draft, review and negotiate a range of commercial contracts and related documents, balancing legal protection with the needs of a growing global regulated business.
  • Help develop and improve our templates, playbooks and ways of working so that legal support remains clear, consistent and scalable.
  • Take primary day-to-day responsibility for supervising OpenPayd’s OAFS matters, liaising with the Office of the Arbiter, representing OpenPayd at hearings where required, and keeping each matter moving to the right outcome.
  • Coordinate and review responses, affidavits, evidence, exhibits and other materials prepared for OAFS proceedings, ensuring submissions are accurate, coherent and persuasive. Support the supervision of complaints, claims, pre-action matters and proceedings in other jurisdictions, with the scope of ownership agreed matter by matter.
  • Coordinate internal stakeholders and external counsel, challenge advice constructively and help turn it into clear, commercially grounded decisions.
  • Spot and escalate significant legal, financial, regulatory or reputational risk early. 

The ideal candidate will have the following:

• A lawyer admitted to practise in Malta, with relevant post-qualification experience gained in-house or in private practice. We expect this role to suit someone at mid-level, but judgement, presentation skills, and potential matter more to us than a fixed PQE range.
• Strong commercial drafting, review and negotiation skills, with the ability to give clear, practical advice in excellent written and spoken English.
• Quick thinking and sound judgement: you absorb new information fast, test assumptions and stay composed when the facts or priorities change.
• Strategic curiosity and commercial instinct: you look beyond the immediate task, understand the broader risk and help shape a sensible path forward.
• Energy, ownership and appetite to learn. You are engaged, dependable and willing to lean into unfamiliar or complex work.
• Strong organisational skills to manage evidence, stakeholders and fixed deadlines without losing sight of the bigger picture.
