Under theclinicalsupervision of theDirector of Addiction Medicine,theAddiction Providerisprimarilyresponsible forthe following: 1)management of intoxication and withdrawalstates,  2)theinitiation and monitoring ofMedically Assisted Treatment,3) the evaluation andmanagement of addiction relatedmedical and psychiatricproblems.  The Addiction Provideris responsibleforconductingmedical histories, performing physical examinations,applyingscreening tools,ordering and interpreting laboratory tests, andcompleting standard documentation related to the treatment ofaddiction. They are responsible forworking incollaboration with medicalandbehavioralhealth staff in our Central Intake Department,Withdrawal Management Program,andResidential and OutpatientPrograms. They provide direct patient carewithin HealthRIGHT 360’sCentral Intake Department, Withdrawal Management Program,and/orResidential Programs. The Addiction Providermay alsoprovide supervision for Advanced Practice Providers in Collaborative Agreements, providing input in the clinical review, performance appraisal, peer review and hiring and terminationof such staff. TheIAPalso supervises the MAThealthcare treatment team in the absence of the Director of Addiction Medicine. This supervision may include  managing MedicalAssistantsand Nurse functions. The position may requireafter hoursworkinassisting Behavioral Health staffduring the night andon weekends. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Skills &Medicine Responsibilities:  

  • Determine severity of drug and alcohol use based on current DSM criteria. 
  • Evaluate and treat drug and alcohol related withdrawal with medications.
  • Determineappropriate ASAMLevel ofCare basedon  ASAM criteria 
  • Assess clients for clearance to enter withdrawal management and prescribeappropriate medication to support withdrawal process.
  • Prescribe medicationassisted treatment to aid in recovery goals. 
  • Evaluateclients in Withdrawal Management and Residential Programs who return to usingsubstances. 
  • Evaluate clients in Withdrawal Managementand Residential Programs who return from the ED or Hospital due to an overdose or any other medical condition. 
  • Monitor clients in the Withdrawal Management Program to ensure safe and effective treatment.
  • Assist clients with state disability insurance applications during the residential programtreatment. 
  • Conduct physical examinations for clearance for the Residential Program
  • Interpret Urinary Drug Screens
  • Monitor clientsin Residential Programming formedicationassisted treatmentcompliance. 
  • Assist Health & Wellness staff with inquiries about medications. 
  • Educates clients on opioid reversal and Narcan Use. 
  • Analyzes and interprets patienthistory, symptoms, physical findings,and/or diagnostic information to developappropriate diagnoses.
  • Maintains complete and detailed records ofmedicalhistory, assessment, and health care plans.
  • Uses motivational interviewing or recovery coaching
  • Consulting with theDirector of Addiction Medicine for treatmentorreferral options.
  • Collaboration withbehavior health and psychiatry teams. 
  • Provide oversight for Advanced Practice Providers including enteringinto aCollaborative Agreement with the Advanced Practice Provider, providing supervision, having input in the clinical review, performance appraisal, peer review and hiring and terminationofproviders and clinical support staff.  
 

EducationandExperience

Required: 

  • M.D.orD.O.degreefromaccreditedUnitedStatesmedicalschool.
  • SuccessfullycompletedinternshipandresidencyataccreditedUnitedStatesInternshiporResidencyProgram. 

 

Certification/Licensure: 

  • BoardCertifiedin family medicineorinternalmedicine.
  • Boardcertifiedorregisteredinaddictionmedicine,orequivalentexperience.
  • Validand active Californiamedical license, 
  • EligibletoparticipateintheCMSMedicaid/Medicarereimbursementprograms.
  • Validand activeDEAlicensewithXwaivertoprescribe buprenorphine. 

Desired:   

  • Clinicalexperience  working withpeople who have experienced addiction, homelessness,incarceration and trauma. 
  • Training in motivational interviewing or recovery coaching
  • Advanced knowledge in primary care-based psychiatry
 

 

Knowledge 

Required: 

-Proficiency in understanding social determinantsof health and harm reduction concepts  

-Strongproficiency with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Word Outlook and internet applications, EMR usage  

-Experience working with individuals withmoderate to severeaddiction, mentalillness and interactions with the criminal justice system.
