About The Role

The Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Use is seekinga Trainer for its nonfatal overdose response system called Relay, an initiative providing 24/7 support to individuals transported to hospital emergency departments (EDs) following a non- fatal opioid overdose. The trainer provides vital support to the Relay personnel, including onboarding training for new Wellness Advocates, and ongoing training support to a staff of 50+ peer Wellness Advocates and Relay-contracted hospital staff.

About the Program

Relay, a nonfatal overdose response system, is an initiative providing 24/7 support to individuals transported to hospital emergency departments (EDs) following a non-fatal opioid overdose. A Wellness Advocate will visit patients in the ED to provide immediate support and overdose prevention training following an overdose event and offer ongoing support and linkage to care for a maximum of three months after hospital discharge.

Responsibilities

Training and Coaching:

• Provide onboarding, technical assistance, and training to Relay staff.
• Develop, tailor and deliver individual and group training for Relay staff based on educational needs, covering topics on: Data, Assessment and Plan (DAP) note writing, overdose prevention, harm reduction, motivational interviewing, critical time intervention model, suicide/homicide assessment, crisis intervention, emergency department relations and rounds, fentanyl and xylazine test strip distribution, Relay policies and procedures, and other identified topics.
• Develop, tailor, and deliver group training for medical staff at Relay-contracted hospitals based on educational needs.
• Provide Wellness Advocates coaching on best practices for training preparation, planning and delivery, as well as facilitation and engagement skills.
• Identify opportunities for external organizations to educate Relay staff on various topics.
• On a regular basis, support trainings to Bureau staff, partner organizations, or the wider NYC community on emerging drug trends, equity-centered initiatives, and overdose prevention education.

Coordination & Collaboration:

•  Coordinate all elements of trainings, including: updating and distributing a training calendar, assembling and transporting materials, adapting presentations to meet the needs of training audience, etc.

·     Contribute to the sourcing and development of new materials and resources aimed at preventing overdose.

·     Work closely with Bureau leadership and staff to collaborate on and coordinate community-based overdose prevention activities.

·     Provide coordination and support of special initiatives related to overdose prevention.

·     Participate in recruitment events to advertise open Relay positions and recruit applicants.

·     Represent Relay in intra-Bureau and Divisional workgroups, meetings and community coalitions.

·     Other duties as assigned to support the overall goals and mission of the department/ organization.  

Requirements

• Education: Bachelor's degree or 6 years of relevant commensurate experience, at a minimum.
• Experience with curriculum development and training facilitation for adult learners, particularly around substance use and mental health issues, racial equity and social justice concepts and practices.
• Experience working with and/or supervising peers.
• Knowledge of substance use issues and harm reduction practice and theory, including syringe exchange, overdose prevention and education for HIV and Hepatitis C prevention.
• Be able to work independently, have excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills, and be a flexible team player. The candidate will also be detail-oriented with outstanding organizational skills.
• Sensitive to various ethnic, racial, and cultural backgrounds, gender identities, sexual orientations, and socioeconomic conditions.
• Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, high volume environment, with proficiency in Zoom, Teams, Excel, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint.
