Electrical Engineer I - Interconnection Engineer

Job Summary

The position is responsible to the Planning Manager for engineering related tasks associated with system planning and interconnection requests. This position requires knowledge and application of electrical power system theory and generation interconnection procedures.

Receives technical direction from the Planning Manager regarding definite objectives and established goals. The employee plans and manages own work after those goals are established. Accuracy, promptness, follow-up, and completeness of assignments are essential.

Regular contact with contractors, members, inspectors and other CORE departments is required to furnish or obtain information as well as to give technical guidance in accordance with CORE standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Reviews small generation through large generation, and large load interconnection applications.
• Prepares interconnection studies to evaluate the feasibility of large load and generation interconnection requests.
• Serves as the subject matter expert on technical aspects of the interconnection process.
• Responsible for the interconnection process from application through energization.
• Assists in review and development of interconnection compliance requirements and reports in accordance with NERC, State of Colorado, and PUC regulations.
• Additional duties that may be required:

• • Prepares system studies including, but not limited to, sectionalizing studies, power factor studies, construction work plans, long-range plans, load balancing studies, and reliability studies.
  • Calculates voltage drop on existing and future distribution facilities.
  • Coordinates system protection to maintain system reliability. Maintains and verifies system protection design and relay settings where necessary
  • Verifies that system improvement designs have switching capabilities.
  • Provides assistance to the Operations Department about sectionalizing and distribution system technical problems.

• Required to return to work in connection with call-outs and emergency situations when directed to do so by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications of Position

• Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and zero to five years of practical equivalent experience required.
• Understanding of power system engineering fundamentals.
• Competent with engineering analysis software packages such as WindMil and CYME.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office: Excel, Word, Outlook, Access, PowerPoint.
• Requires valid Colorado driver’s license with satisfactory driving record within CORE Electric Cooperative standards. 

Preferred Qualifications of Position

• Experience with reviewing large load and generation interconnection applications.
• Experience reviewing electrical schematic drawings and single line diagrams.
• Understanding of system protection principles and applications.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

• Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally.  If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
• The worker is subject to both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside. Physical demands may also include walking or hiking on all types of terrain and driving a vehicle for extended periods of time.
