Associate Software Engineer Intern - YMS

About the Role 

Kaleris builds Yard Management Systems (YMS) that control andoptimize the movement of goods throughout the supply chain — across gates, yards, docks, and drivers. We are actively expanding our YMS platform with new automation capabilities including gate intelligence, real-time yard visibility, and driver self-service workflows. 

As an intern on this team,you'll contribute to real engineering problems on a live product.You'll be assigned to one or more focus areas based on team needs and your own strengths — which may shift during the internship as priorities evolve. You should be comfortable with ambiguity and self-directed enough to ramp up on a new area with limitedhand-holding. 

What You May Work On 

Your work will fall withineither of the following areas, depending on where the team needs you most: 

1. Gate Automation & Computer Vision (Research & Prototype) 

• Explore and prototype computer vision and OCR approaches for automated detection of truck and trailer data at yard gates — trailer numbers, license plates, cab numbers, USDOT numbers, and seal presence 

• Build and evaluate training data pipelines using publicly available datasets and real-world gate imagery 

• Benchmark detection accuracy and document what is achievable in-house vs. what would require significant investment 

• Assess feasibility of running detection models on edge hardware (e.g., NVIDIA Jetson or equivalent) 

. YMS Platform Feature Development 

• Work on backend features within the Kaleris YMS platform — contributing to gate workflow logic, shipment management, dock door assignments, or yard inventory tracking 

• Write clean, testable code andparticipate in code reviews 

• Help reduce manual data entry pain points through automation and smarter integrations 

What You Bring 

Required: 

• Currently pursuing a B.E./B.Tech or M.E./M.Tech in Computer Science, Electronics, or a related field (final or pre-final year) 

• Solid programming fundamentals in at least one language — Python, Java, or similar 

• Any hands-on project or coursework involving computer vision, OCR, or machine learning (academic, personal, or Kaggle — show us the code) 

• Familiarity withPyTorch or TensorFlow, and Python data libraries (OpenCV, NumPy) 

• Ability to pick upnew technologies independently — youwon't have a dedicated senior in every focus area 

• Clear written communication —you'll need to document your work and surface blockers clearly 

• Genuine curiosity about how software solves real operational problems 

Good to Have: 

• Web development experience — frontend or backend 

• Ruby on Rails familiarity — our YMS platform has Rails components; any Rails or web backend experience is a strong plus 

• Exposure to REST APIs, event-driven systems, or database design 

• Interest inlogistics, yard/warehouse operations, or supply chain technology
