This role is based on Disney’s private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay.
 

Responsibilities

  • Animal Care of Aquatic species, including elasmobranches
  • Animal Collection Management, i.e. planning, maintaining, acquisition/disposition of animal collection, etc.
  • Program administration, staff scheduling, training, quality control, etc.
  • Communication with Island Management and APEI Curators, verbal and written
  • Guest Service, ability to exceed guest expectations and create magical moments.
  • Responsibilities include but are not limited to, the overall operation of Cast Away Ray’s stingray experience.
    • Ensure overall health of stingray collection.
    • Coordinate excursions with DCL staff.
    • Ensure message points and delivery of spiel for program is consistent and engaging.
    • Produce reports on guest attendance and scheduling
    • Ensure animal care records are up to date and provided to Seas Curator
    • Order and ensure animal food is procured and meets quality standards
    • Coach stingray cast on animal care and guest service standards
    • Work in cooperation with Castaway Cay, ships, and shore side management for delivery of Cast Away Rays experience and island management as needed/required
    • Communicate and report operational updates, issue, and planning to APEI - Animal Operations Area Director in a timely manner
    • Coordinate annual stingray Veterinary health exam’s including travel, room procurement, daily schedule of exams
    • Maintain fish holding/collecting operations at Castaway Cay
    • Facilitate ongoing research projects e.g. Coordination of personnel, equipment, reports, permits, etc.
  • Zoological responsibilities;
    • Collection planning.
    • Diet change requests, updated diets, medical diets, training diets, for Seas species/specimens.
    • Development & implementation of animal husbandry, training and enrichment programs.
    • Acquisition, disposition, birth, death notices for collection specimens.
    • Reviews of research projects/abstracts/publications/DAPCAS proposal related to Seas species.
    • Invitations for medical/capture procedures on Seas specimens.
  • Deliver messages and experiences for TV, Radio, facilitate special requests as needed for PR, Marketing, and VIP guest.
  • Integrate the BASICS and seven service guidelines into daily assignments

Basic Qualifications

  • High school degree or equivalent.
  • Minimum 1 year management experience.
  • At least 1 year experience with Stingrays.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of organizational and business planning skills.
  • Demonstrated passion for conservation and animal care.
  • Demonstrated strong coaching and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, develop and sustain performance of cast members.
  • Demonstrated desire to provide guests with outstanding service on a daily basis.
  • Certified SCUBA diver

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS degree with emphasis on biology
  • Previous Zoological Manager experience
  • Boat handling skills
  • Research experience
